Mews News:

Remi's Road to Recovery

Meet Remi, a handsome and floofy three-year-old kitty from the Stockton Animal Shelter. When Remi came to Nine Lives in early May, he had a bite wound on his front leg, an ulcer in his left eye, and was severely dehydrated and lethargic. On top of that, he had severe dental disease and tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

We wanted to treat Remi's dental disease but pre-surgery bloodwork revealed that he also had Feline Hemotropic Mycoplasma (FHM), a blood parasite spread by fleas and ticks. FHM causes the cat's immune system to attack its own blood cells, and because Remi is FIV positive, he was particularly vulnerable. Surgery would need to wait.

A month later, after a course of antibiotics and other treatments, Remi finally made his way to our clinic for full mouth extractions. Today, he's on the mend and gaining strength every day. Despite his many challenges, he remains incredibly sweet and gentle, spending his days enjoying tummy rubs and leisurely naps.

While Remi isn’t available for adoption just yet, your support can help us continue rescuing and treating cats like him. Please consider making a donation today.

Liam's Corner

Our second annual Kitten Baby Shower is just around the corner, and I hope to see you there! This special event is where our generous donors can see their support in action. We will have many adorable kittens who have graduated from our life-saving programs, all eager for cuddles and forever homes. You can even adopt onsite!

It’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow advocates, our dedicated veterinary team, and our amazing volunteers. There will be bubbles, fun games, and endless kitten snuggles. Make sure to secure your tickets now before they sell out!

As we are in the midst of kitten season, our team is working tirelessly to save as many lives as possible. To put things in perspective, out of the 457 cats we have rescued this year, over 230 have been kittens — and there is still much more work to do.

I want to highlight the immense effort that goes into saving just one kitten by sharing Oliver's story.

Oliver, an orphaned kitten, came to us after being found on the streets of Hayward at barely two weeks old. His eyes were crusted shut, and he and his littermates were crying for their mum. Oliver was smaller and weaker than his littermates and required around-the-clock care, including feedings every 3-4 hours and daily fluids.

After a week of intensive treatments, Oliver and his littermates went to stay with a wonderful foster family, Nevin and Taylor. They bottle-fed Oliver and showered him with all the love and affection he needed to fight for his life.

Nevin noticed that despite Oliver's small stature, his purr was the loudest, and his belly was the fullest by the end of his time in foster care. It was clear that Oliver was determined to live.

Eight weeks after he arrived at Nine Lives, Oliver was healthy enough to be adopted. He met his forever family two days later, and is now thriving in his new home in Redwood City.

Oliver’s story highlights the countless hours our staff and foster parents dedicate to saving each kitten. And there are hundreds more desperate little lives who will come through our doors this year. If you can make a lifesaving donation, please consider doing so TODAY!
