Message from ITGA Executive Director Beth Bagwell
|
|
Community engagement professionals, representatives from universities around the globe, municipal managers, people who seek to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in their workplaces and the world: Those are the talents, the skill sets and the qualified, compassionate human beings who make up the 2020–21 board for the International Town & Gown Association (ITGA).
As you saw beginning on September 29, we will devote a segment of our weekly newsletter to introduce you to these community leaders and selfless volunteers. Some have served ITGA for years, while others bring fresh perspectives.
We hope you will reach out to them — separate from our annual conference and other programs — to network, spark ideas and solve the challenges we are facing, whether it’s to bring students safely back to campus, customers safely back to stores, and our membership together in person once again to foster the relationships so vital to our work.
Also, please join our hosts, Marquette University and the city of Milwaukee, for our 2nd virtual ITGA City & University Relations conference from May 24–26, 2021. Our theme — Innovating for Tomorrow, Together — will empower you with innovative ideas to keep your campus and communities both vital and safe as we navigate a changing landscape. Both conference registration and Call for Proposals are open. Please consider bringing your team and presenting on one of the three conference tracks. More information can be found here. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at Beth@itga.org.
Thank you,
Beth Bagwell

NEW Board Member Highlight: Meet Sara Bloom
|
|
Sara Bloom, Downtown Hays Development Corporation, Kansas
An award-winning graphic designer, a former TV news producer, a foster mom “who has gotten to love on kids of every color” and now executive director of the Downtown Hays Development Corporation in historic Hays, Kansas, Sara Bloom is a new member of the ITGA board. Her involvement in the organization already has helped her benefit from the relationships it creates and fosters, which she calls “vital to the success of every city and university.” Also vital is “starting deliberate dialogues that shine light on diversity, celebrate differences, create opportunities and promote love,” she says. The annual ITGA conference is a highlight of her year, and Sara aims to inspire others in a way that ITGA has inspired her to make a difference in the world. To contact Sara, click here.

The International Town & Gown Association (ITGA) proved in 2020 — amid a global pandemic — that it could pivot from an in-person conference to a dynamic virtual experience. We’ll do that again in May 2021, taking you virtually to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a hopping, historic, artistic hotbed of a city with so many handles, it’s hard to grab onto just one:
Join our hosts, Marquette University and the city of Milwaukee, for the annual ITGA City & University Relations conference from May 24–26, 2021. Our theme — Innovating for Tomorrow, Together — will empower you with innovative ideas to keep your campus and communities both vital and safe as we navigate a changing landscape.
Best practices, peer-leading strategies plus networking — a key part of every ITGA conference — will equip you for the coming academic year. “ITGA is such a community-minded group of people,” one of our hundreds of members said at a recent webinar. “We’re all interested in learning from one another and enjoy the opportunity to engage.”
Three ways to engage now in the May 2021 conference:
-
Register and qualify for the “early bird” rate.
-
Submit a proposal. Share your own emerging and best practices.
- Encourage colleagues on your campus and in your community to attend together. Those end-of-the-day downloads are invaluable — and more fun!
We’ll innovate together. Look to the future together. Learn and lead together. And enjoy a three-day virtual visit to Milwaukee and the beautiful Marquette campus. Together. Experience ITGA, your hub for campus-and-community learning and engagement. Submitted by Amy Gage, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota

The Call for Proposals are open!
|
|
For 2021, Marquette University and the city of Milwaukee are honored to partner in efforts to bring the 2nd virtual ITGA City & University Relations Annual Conference to life from May 24 to May 26.
ITGA set a powerfully relevant tone in 2020 around our unprecedented health and racial climate. While the 2021 conference theme “Innovating for Tomorrow, Together” opens the door wide to accommodate many critical issues, we recognize the work in our town and gown environments continue to be centered around COVID-19 and/or matters on race, equity and inclusion. The conference program and track submissions will be illuminated by these lenses (either laser-focused or in a more diffused spectrum).
The Acknowledging the local and national recognition Milwaukee has garnered as a city of festivals, the musical track themes call-up the energy that usually fills and fuels our city all through the year. The tracks are timely and relevant: Innovative strategies that build consolation from the desolation; Coalescing partnerships to mutually strengthen what are perceived to be disparate communities; and Finding peace, safety and common ground in off campus neighborhoods. The tracks can be viewed here. The Call for Proposals are open until Friday, February 19. Questions? Contact Susan@itga.org.

School Security and Safety
|
|
The public services being provided by Police Departments to the schools in our nation's cities are changing rapidly. This is due to the national enhancement of police services, the greater use of new technologies by our Police Departments, and the increasing diversity that is taking place in our schools to reflect the students that are being serviced by their services. Gun safety is also a major evolving best practice in the school security and safety field. The evolving school security best practices that are being provided by our Police Departments in cities and schools throughout America are highlighted. Depending upon the nature of these service changes, the funds needed to implement them, and the staffing required to do so, many of these changes have been implemented directly by the Chief of Police, while other changing services might require approval of the City Manager, and possibly the city's elected officials, especially if additional funding is required to provide a service.
