Message from the CEO

Dear PATA Members and Industry Colleagues,

Last evening I participated in a panel in Singapore with the theme "The Future of Luxury Travel". While we discussed luxury, sustainability, and innovation - as with all travel discussions/ panels/ conferences of late the topic moved to the issue of the industry staffing gap. It has been impacting North America and Europe most acutely as we all know, but now the challenge is emerging in Asia Pacific. The issue of travel staff engagement and retention is one that has been brewing for years but became exacerbated with the pandemic-driven industry downturn. [...] A myriad of solutions are needed to address this complex gap.

But I'll share a few that should be considered here:

  • Foundational is fair wages - business models in travel need to incorporate more fair financial inclusion through the ranks. MNCs are feeling the ramifications of not doing so now. Taking care of staff is just as important as taking care of the customer. Your value proposition is in their hands.
  • Beyond fair wages, there are other critical elements that can be equally as important. Celebrate and acknowledge great service delivery.
  • [...] Every day travel and hospitality staff around the globe are conducting big and small "rescues" aiding travelers and customers in need. Let's bring honor and pride back into servicing by supporting our staff in celebrating these efforts and successes. Create the right environment and your teams will have a sense of purpose and pride.

Jazz Tour Showcases

Hong Kong Artists to US Audiences

As a way of fostering cultural exchange between Hong Kong and the United States, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office marked the 25th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with a first-ever jazz tour of four major American cities (New York, Chicago, Washington DC and New Orleans) featuring an all-star band of Hong Kong’s finest and most respected players.

Led by Hong Kong natives Eugene Pao on guitar and Ted Lo on keyboards, the truly international crew includes Montreal-born bassist Sylvain Gagnon and Calcutta-born drummer Anthony Fernandes. Jazz trumpeter-composer Randy Brecker, a co-founder (with his sax playing late-brother Michael Brecker) of iconic ‘70s funk-fusion band The Brecker Brothers joined the Hong Kong musicians in their performance in New York.

The jazz tour will make stops at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York (Sept. 13), City Winery in Chicago (Sept. 14), Renwick Gallery of The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington

D.C. (Sept. 16) and the New Orleans Jazz Museum in the Crescent City (Sept. 17).
