Gazette Monthly | December 2016
A Word from Our GM

The temperature has dropped, and it's certainly a shock for us coast-ers, but the horses are in their element. After nearly two months off, they're enjoying the cool weather and the new hay nets we bought to offer them continual forage, simulating a more natural grazing schedule and promoting inner heat. We've also implemented a new watering system, maintaining the herd's access to fresh water through freezing temperatures. Blackie and Katie received custom "snow" shoes this week, and told me that they're very much looking forward to sleigh-rides.
I am most excited to revive a tradition I enjoyed in my youth: equine-assisted tobogganing! Steve and I are scoping out hills, and desensitizing a few horses to pulling a toboggan in anticipation of our December guests.

Also in anticipation of the holiday's, Kim and I have spent countless hours decking the halls. The tree is up, presents are wrapped, and lights are hung. Luckily we're also getting our cold snap now, which means the smaller lakes will be frozen over, and temperatures risen for our December 21 reopening.

RENOVATIONS
- The Wrangler Cabin

The "Wrangler Cabin" - or the cabin formerly known as The Wrangler Shack has received a face-lift.
The cabin had great bones, and just need a few adjustments and some TLC to become one the properties' premium suites.

With plumping, 3 piece bathroom, kitchenette, baseboard heating, wood fire, and three private bedrooms, this cabin allows maximum comfort with the traditional log cabin feel the Flying U is famous for.

A large porch offers a view of Green Lake obstructed only by your own personal horse corral.

With a fresh coat of paint, new furniture, and a few key fixtures, the cabin came together beautifully and we're so proud to present it for 2017 bookings.

Power Pioneers 25th Anniversary Christmas Luncheon:

To kick off our holiday season we hosted 21 members of the 100 Mile House chapter of BC Hydro's Power Pioneers for their 25th anniversary luncheon. The menu boasted traditional three-course roast turkey with all the fixings.

The Power Pioneers brought the sunshine with them, and the newly frozen lake sparkled in the afternoon sun.

PMT Chartered Accounting Annual Christmas Party:

Then we were excited to welcome PMT Chartered Accountants and their families for a Christmas Party Saturday December 10th. This marked the first overnight guests The Ranch saw in fourteen years! Coworkers, family and friends had an amazing time at their annual party, and danced the night away to ranch favourite, Gordie West.
The weather was no match for our custom stoves, and guests stayed toasty warm in wood-heated cabins.

The company chooses a new venue within The Cariboo each year, and bestowed the highest compliment on the ranch, saying "they've been searching for a spot like ours for eight years".

There's still some space to experience Christmas in the Cariboo.
Come for the day, or stay for the week and let us take care of everything!

NEW HORSES!

SASSY:
Sassy is a coming three year old Quarter Horse with an exceptionally sweet personality. Younger than we usually bring on, Sassy has the common sense of a much older horse, and we think with after a calm start to her working career, she'll make a lovely little horse - enjoying her life here at the Ranch

BELLA:
Bella in a 20 year old Appaloosa mare who is happy to have finally found a long term home after years of being juggled from home to home. Bella however, was most excited to be be back part of a herd, as at her previous home she'd lived alone. Despite being in her twenties, Bella has a lot of sass and athleticism.

EYORE:
Eyore is a 12 year old Standardbred gelding. This bomb-proof guy will be spending his winter on coast before coming up to the ranch in the spring for a month of refreshment training before he gets thrown into our school program.
And don't worry - We're not forgetting the tack!

Weddings at The U!

When we decided to The Flying U up as a wedding venue, we had no idea the remarkable response we would get. With 2017 nearly booked, we're already taking reservations into 2018.  With very limited availability, don't hesitate in considering The Flying U for your big day!

  • We still have 2 spots left for Spring (April & May) 2017, and

  • 3 spots for Fall (September - November) 2017.

SCHOOL PROGRAM

Last year we were ecstatic to welcome Saint Michael's University School as one of the schools to participate in our equine assisted learning School Program for a total of four schools and over 180 kids.
This year we expect more than 300 kids to participate including Vancouver Police Department Cadets.

The Flying U School Program has opened it's gates to Over 6000 students in the past 30 years, offering a unique opportunity for children and youth to experience this provinces' rich history through Canada's oldest guest ranch.

This year we've reworked the traditional program to add shorter options and day trips for local schools. We want every student and youth group in the province and beyond to be able to experience the tradition and excitement offered at The Ranch.

Victoria Gallant - Promoted to Supervisor!

Victoria was a key member both in our 2016 season at The Ranch and in launching Prospector's Roadhouse at Marmot Ridge. We're excited not only to welcome her back in 2017, but glad she's accepted a position on our management team.

We're still hiring a few select individuals.
