Environmental Portraiture | Denver
It is hard to explain how much I love editing after a great shoot... I could hardly sleep after editing this recent portrait session!
Aligning the intangibles of weather, lighting conditions and atmosphere and making them work for a photo in an architectural, food or landscape shot presents both the ultimate challenge and the potential reward in the finished photograph. Factor in a fleeting facial expression and WOW... it is something special when it all works!
Until now I have shied away from this type of shooting for fear of "missing the moment," but my nerves have recently given way to somewhat of an addiction to the challenges and HUGE rewards of photographing environmental portraiture. Huge thanks to my latest beautiful model and her family for letting me share these photos with you.

Much to my son's frequent (comedic) frustration, I am truly obsessed with all things photographic, and I love helping people get started with their new dSLR cameras. I often find myself in passionate conversations about cameras and shooting, and recently decided to offer a blog series for beginners looking to broaden their skill set with regards to every day photo taking.
It seems appropriate to begin with one of my absolute favorite, easy to explore skills, learning to move beyond program mode to use your aperture setting creatively for selective focus in your photos.
If you are curious about the basics, take a look here and if you like, leave questions and/or comments for future posts. Check back for a new tip each month!

Year in Review | Top Shots of 2010
2010 kept me busy in a variety of new ways, and it was an educational and quite satisfying exercise to gather a collection of personal favorite photographs from across a broad spectrum of commissioned and personal work.
You can view the collection here, covering architectural, wedding, portrait, event, volunteer, food, macro, landscape and personal work.

Celebrating Indomitable Spirit... I have written several blog posts about the absolutely amazing gift to the world that is Mountainfilm. This story posted on their blog about Prudence Mahbena (in which I am so honored to have my photos featured) is a true testament to the powerful "Domino Effect" of this organization, and of the magic, love and generosity that surrounds us in the world.
Watch for locally made, Mountainfilm premiered and award winning "Bag It" on PBS soon; for screenings of Tom Shadyac's inspirational "I AM" which premiered at Mountainfilm and will open in select theaters Feb 18; and best of luck to Oscar nominated documentaries which screened at Mountainfilm this past year, "Gasland," "Waste Land" and "Restrepro."
Mark your calendars NOW for this year's festival in Telluride over Memorial Day Weekend, or find a Mountainfilm on Tour date near you!

The first weekend in March will bring me back Telluride for my 5th consecutive year photographing the Telluride AIDS Benefit. I am also lucky enough to be photographing my 4th in the TAB Model Photo series. I am truly humbled by the response to these photographs; bids on these photos alone have raised nearly $10K in the Art Auctions over the past 3 years, and this year we plan on donating a model photo to the Live Auction as well!
We are busy dreaming up this year's photo, which will be revealed at the TAB auction on Friday, March 4th at the Sheridan Opera House. Hope to see you there for this incredible cause and hugely fun event!
