Merrill Library Director to Retire

Marianne Thibodeau, Director at UMM's Merrill Library, will

retire at the end of the month. Marianne has served as Merrill Library

Associate Librarian, and Library Director for a span of twenty years. She also

served as Interim Dean of Libraries at UMaine's Fogler Library from June

through mid-October 2022. Prior to this position, Thibodeau served as Assistant Library

Director and Head of Instruction and Research at Wentworth Institute of

Technology in Boston and as a teacher in Maine public schools.

She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education

from the University of Maine at Machias, a Master of Library and Information

Science degree from the University of South Carolina – Columbia, and a Master

of Educational Leadership from the University of Maine.

Marianne served on the board of the Association of College and

Research Libraries, New England Chapter (ACRL/NEC), and is a member of the

University of Maine System URSUS Library Directors Council. Thibodeau serves

the University of Maine at Machias as a member of the Leadership Team, and on

the editorial board of the Library of Early Maine Literature, a scholarly

imprint of the University of Maine at Machias Press.

Thibodeau has instituted the ever popular "Dog Night"

in which therapy dogs visit the library during final exams. She has overseen

the conversion of the collection from the Dewey Classification System to the

Library of Congress Classification to reflect the other University of Maine

System Libraries. According to Thibodeau, working with students and faculty

have been the most rewarding aspect of of her years in library service.

When asked what is next she says, "I look forward to exploring this new stage. Most

of all the unhurried time to travel, take a course, read, garden, and to visit

with parents, children, and grandchildren."

Washingtonia Digitization Project

The Merrill Library on the University of Maine-Machias campus is pleased to announce collaboration with the Fogler Library at the University of Maine to digitize the Washingtonia, the UMM yearbook and newsletters spanning 1910 through 1999. You can now view and download the issues of the Washingtonia that are now available, 1910 through 1975. They can be accessed from the Digital Commons tab on Merrill Library’s website here. This is a work in progress, and we will be adding succeeding issues as they are digitized. So, stay tuned!

Temporary Request Service Interruption

Sharing between libraries is one of the best and most valuable services we provide you. This works through a behind-the-scenes delivery process, run by a delivery service.

The contract for our book delivery service is held by the Maine State Library and is subject to State Procurement Laws and procedures. This year, it was required, by state procedures, to go through a competitive bidding process, and was subsequently awarded to a new vendor.

Because of the transition to a new vendor who won the competitive bid, and a legal appeal process to overturn that decision by an unsuccessful bidder, there will be an interruption to book delivery between libraries at the end of the current contract which expires on June 30th.

We do not currently have firm dates for the length of this interruption, but we expect that there will be no delivery for at least six weeks this summer, starting on July 1.

In anticipation of this interruption, the Maine InfoNet Board and the Minerva Executive Board have made the difficult decision to turn off all requesting between libraries within the MaineCat environment, including Minerva, MILS and URSUS, as of June 4th. This affects all UMS Libraries patrons as well as all public patrons.

You will still be able to request and place holds on locally owned items, but will not be able to request materials from other libraries.

Turning off requesting between libraries will allow materials currently in transit to be delivered and will reduce the flow of new material entering delivery. This will help get as many items back to their owning libraries as possible and will help ensure materials are not stranded in the delivery system.

Please be assured we recognize and feel the same frustration with this challenging situation that you all are feeling.

Did you know thanks to UMaine's Fogler Library, Merrill Library has access to several current and historic news sources available for UMaine and UMaine-Machias faculty, students, employees and community patrons? For instance, the Global Newsstream database provides access to popular local and national publications such as the Bangor Daily News and the Washington Post. Additionally, it features content from more than 2,000 news sources stretching back to the 1980s and represents one of the largest collections of news from around the world.

Because the Global Newsstream is funded by the State of Maine through the Digital Maine Library, it is available to all Maine residents.
