VAST 2019/2020 Speaker Schedule
First Meeting is Wednesday, September 4th, 6:45 - 9pm

We meet on the first Wednesday of the month, except for January, which has been moved to the second Wednesday of the month because of the holiday. Meetings start at 6:45 and will be over at 9pm. 
The meeting location is the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory St, Denton, TX.

September 4 - Local glass artist Christie Wood, owner of Art Glass Ensembles will speak on the "History of Stained Glass in Denton, Texas."
October 4  - Umut Demirguc from the College of Visual Art and Design at UNT will Lecture and demonstrate Needle Felting.
November 6  - Sudeep Kumar will share information about the International Urban Sketchers and Plein Air drawing.
December 4  - TBD
2nd Wednesday, January 8  - Randall Good, Presentation of his "old masters" style of art which is influenced by Italian Renaissance and Mannerist period.  Randall will demonstrate the process of Gold Leafing.
February 5  - Beverly Boren Lecture and Watercolor Demonstration (Beverly will also conduct a watercolor workshop February 3rd, 4th and 5th.
March 4 - TBD
April 1 - Liz Hill, watercolor and collage artist will lecture, demonstrate, and do a workshop. Workshop will include using live model.  High School Competition. No mini show.
May 6  - Stephen Zhang, presentation and demo on Watercolor.

"I am a graduate of American River College, Sacramento, CA, with an Associates Arts Degree in Fine Arts. I studied under the late artist/teacher Gary Pruner. I am now retired from the United States Postal Service after 35 years service, in which over "16 years"
as the Sacramento District "Graphics Illustrator." After retiring,my wife and I moved from Sacramento, California to Denton, Texas in 2006. I work mainly from photographs that I have taken or collected. "If the picture moves me, I paint it!" The mediums I use are watercolors, oils and acrylics. "As of late, mostly acrylics." 

VADO = VAST Artist Day Out
Invitation to go to VADO, Free!

The members of VADO invite VAST members to be their guests at the meetings this summer and for September and October this fall. Just bring something to work on and plan to enjoy the time with other artists - or drop by and visit, and go with us to eat!

VADO is held the first and third Thursday of each month except November and December. This group is a great opportunity to get to know other members and enjoy the fellowship of other artists. It is an opportunity to get feedback for something you may be working on! 

The first Thursday meetings are held in the Beulah Acres Building at Global Spheres in Corinth from 9:30am to 12:30pm (August 1st, September 5th, and October 3rd.)  The third Thursday meetings are held in the PAAC craft room from 9:30am  to 12:30pm (July 18, Aug 15th, September 19th, and October 17th.)

The 33rd annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition

Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Since 2017, the exhibition has expanded to include works by international artists.
 
THE JUROR
Beth C. McLaughlin is Chief Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts. Ms. McLaughlin has held leadership and curatorial roles in the arts and museum fields for over 25 years at institutions across the U.S., including Fuller Craft Museum, Oakland Museum of California, and DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. She has curated over 45 exhibitions and has served as a juror/adjudicator for a number of cultural organizations, including American Craft Council, Fiber Art Now Excellence in Fibers, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Providence Holiday Art Sale, and the City of Worcester. Ms. McLaughlin has been published in several books and periodicals, such as Crafting Dissent: Handicraft as Protest from the American Revolution to the Pussyhats, Fiber Art Now, the Decorative Arts Society Newsletter, and American Craft Magazine. Ms. McLaughlin is passionate about expanding awareness of the craft field, promoting the makers, and exploring the transformative powers of handmade objects.

Juror Awards:  $1,000, $750, $500 and $250. 
Works produced in any of the craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, or any combination of craft media, are acceptable.

2019 Irving Art Association Animal Awards Competition Call for Entries 
Exhibit: September 1 - 27, 2019
The show is open to area artists.

Fee:  $45 non-members,  $25 IAA members
Online Entry Due: August 29, no images, u p to three entries per artist

All entries meeting requirements will be accepted.
For our challenge category this year, we invite you to depict one of the most durable animals found in Texas, the " ARMADILLO ".

Any animal species is acceptable as subject matter for works, both wildlife and domestic, including pets. Again this year, we are including creatures from fantasy (you can make up your own creature or creatures), mythology and Cryptozoology.  Artwork must be an original rendering from personal photographs or observation or your own imagination.

Día de los Muertos: Catrina and Other Memorable Ladies - call for entries

The  Bath House Cultural Center will present the 33rd Annual  Día de los Muertos ( Day of  the Dead) art exhibition. The show features local, regional, and international artists working in traditional and contemporary styles to celebrate, explore, and honor people, things and ideas that have "passed on."  

The  Día de  los  Muertos: Catrina and Other Memorable Ladiesexhibition will feature Day of the Dead altars and visual art in a variety of media. The works will be inspired by the Day of the Dead character,  Catrina, and by the legacy of other prominent women.
