French Students Experience Julia Child: A Recipe for Life Exhibit

Madame Campbell arranged a field trip to the Henry Ford Museum for her French for Careers class, Honors French 2 and French 2 classes to see the "Julia Child: A Recipe for Life" exhibit. Madame Lacroix, mother of Lizzy Barker also accompanied the group for the Julia Child study.

Madame Campbell prepared a study guide for her students as they viewed the exhibit with questions analyzing her life and career in France as well as in the United States. The focus was on Julia Child's passion for learning the true art of authentic French cooking despite the many challenges she faced in her journey and career to pursue her dream. The students also learned how this achievement was revolutionary for women in this period of our history and how Julia Child became a legacy as she empowered and advocated for women in a male chef's cooking world!

The students enjoyed a lunch in the museum which served items cooked from Julia Child's "The French Chef" cooking book including coq au vin, cassoulet, ratatouille and haricots verts. It was a fun and educational day!

Sage Johnson '24 Debutante Feature in NY Times

Sage Johnson '24, Mercy Executive Board Chair, was presented as a debutante with the Cotillion Society of Detroit Educational Foundation on April 22, 2023. Sage had the privilege of being interviewed by the prestigious New York Times and shared her personal experience about being a 2023 debutante. Her interview was published in the July 16, 2023 edition here. She truly feels this experience, "helped her learn more about social graces and created friendships with other goal-oriented young ladies." Congratulations, Sage!

OFFICE OF MISSION & MINISTRY

Make a Difference All School Service Day

Mercy High School is proud to present our Annual Mercy Make a Difference Day on Thursday, September 21. On this day during Spirit Week, staff and students will be going out into the community to do service. Imagine what an impact 600+ people doing 3 hours of service will have! We are expecting 100% attendance, so please do not schedule college visits or doctor appointments.

Schedule

  • School will start at 8:00 a.m. with a meeting in Adviser Group followed by a short prayer service, directions for the day, and boarding of the buses.
  • Students will travel to the location and work with their Adviser and Adviser Group from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. doing a variety of service tasks. Students will earn 3 hours of community service toward their graduation requirement.
  • The buses will bring the groups back to school. Lunch will be provided.
  • The day will end at 1:45 p.m.
  • Students will wear either a maroon or gold Mercy spirit shirt. If you have a Mercy Make A Difference Day shirt from previous years, feel free to wear. Please reach out to Mission and Ministry if your daughter does not have a shirt.

Participation

Please note that while the Mercy permission slip and medical release form were already submitted in FinalForms, some of the work sites require additional permission forms. Students who receive an additional permission form from their Adviser, are required to sign and submit prior to September 21. Participation is mandatory. The Mercy Make a Difference Day Committee has coordinated with many organizations that are counting on us for our service. The goal is to have all of Mercy working together in the community.

What happens if my daughter is absent?

Students who miss Make a Difference Day may jeopardize their participation in the Homecoming Dance. Any student not in attendance will be expected to provide 3 hours of service. If this is a pre-arranged absence, this service needs to be completed prior to 9/21. Students absent because of illness or injury will still be required to provide service. Approval for the Homecoming Dance will be made on an individual basis. If your daughter has a pre-arranged commitment on September 21, documentation of the absence and prior service completion will be expected to attend the Homecoming Dance. Please contact the Office of Mission and Ministry to find service opportunities throughout the school.

Appropriate Dress

Please make sure your daughter is appropriately dressed to do service activities. Jeans, sweats, athletic or comfortable pants; sturdy, closed-toe shoes; and the Mercy spirit shirt are necessary. Students may bring sunscreen and bug spray if needed. More specific details on dress will be provided by your daughter’s Adviser. Please note: Most sites suggest bringing heavy-duty gardening gloves.

Water Bottles

In keeping with the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concern of care for the Earth, plastic water bottles will not be provided. We ask that ALL students bring their own water bottle from home to fill prior to loading the the bus. Making sure it is labeled with the student name will be helpful as well.

KAIROS Retreat

The Class of 2024 is invited to attend a KAIROS retreat during their Senior year. The word KAIROS is a Greek word which means "God's time" or "an opportune time." KAIROS is a long-standing tradition here at Mercy. In October, this will be Mercy's 76th KAIROS retreat! We stand on the shoulders of thousands of Mercy girls who have come before us who have attended this retreat. We are proud to continue this sacred tradition this year.

We welcome ALL Seniors to attend regardless of their religion or where they are on their faith journey. KAIROS is a four day retreat Tuesday-Friday.

Applications available soon. Please direct any questions to Mary Kate Becker at mkbecker@mhsmi.org.

COVID REMINDER

As we approach the start of cold and flu season, we unfortunately will also experience an uptick in Covid cases. We kindly remind you to keep your daughter at home if she is experiencing Covid symptoms, or tests Covid positive.

For your reference, Mercy High School adheres to the current CDC recommendation for any student who tests Covid positive. Infected students should:

  • Isolate at home for 5 days (day "0" is day symptoms begin or day test was taken for those without symptoms.
  • If symptoms have improved or no symptoms developed, the student may leave isolation after day 5 and wear a KN95 mask for 5 more days (ending after day 10).

We thank you for your support and commitment to the wellbeing of our Mercy community!

PERFORMING ARTS PRODUCTIONS

It's going to be an exciting year for Mercy High School Performing Arts! Mercy High School has a legacy of excellence in theater. Our students perform in a beautiful 1,200 person auditorium, which will be newly outfitted with LED lighting and a projection system.

The world premiere fall play "Angels of Bataan" is October 20-22, 2023. It is written by local playwright Tracy Wells and inspired by the true story of several army and navy nurses taken as prisoners of war during WWII.

We are also the Michigan winners of the United States of Frozen contest, giving us the exclusive rights for the Michigan High School premiere of "Frozen the complete Broadway musical." Auditions are September 23 and the show is March 14-24, 2024.

Being an all-girls high school, we are looking for 8th grade and high school boys and children (boys and girls) age 8+ to round out our casts. Audition information, show summaries and tickets will be available for both shows on our website: mhsmi.org/performing-arts.

Email Shelley Bajorek, director, with any questions: sbajorek@mhsmi.org.
