Happy Catholic Schools Week! The Office of Mission and Ministry and our student team have a great week of activities planned for each day's theme.


Monday: Celebrating Community & Family

Activities included knitting, blanket making, placemat decorating for winter warming centers. Write cards to other Mercy students across the country and letters of gratitude for those who support Catholic Education.


Tuesday: Celebrating Faculty & Staff

Special staff breakfast and treats.


Wednesday: Celebrating Vocations & Our Parish

Senior Class Alumnae Breakfast is 8am-10am. Join us for all-school Mass in the Auditorium at 10:15am. Open House in Mission & Ministry to chat with guests about their vocation and Catholic faith.


Thursday: Celebrating Our Nation

Staff and students may wear Catholic grade school, high school, or college shirts. Group of students will attend the AOD Catholic Schools Week Mass at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit. Write letters of support to veterans in the Mission & Ministry office. Coloring activity in the Media Center with American Catholic Saints.


Friday: Celebrating Students

Students may dress down in a slumber party theme and wear pajamas, pajama pants, slippers. Special student treat during Adviser Group and play Catholic Schools Week Kahoot!

AUDITORIUM/GYM ENTRANCE CLOSED 1/31


Please be advised students will not be able to enter the building through the Auditorium/Gymnasium doors and the Lobby will be closed tomorrow, morning, January 31. Students must enter at the Flagpole entrance. The Lobby will reopen after the Senior Class Alumnae breakfast.

MARLINS MAKING HEADLINES


Regional Scholastic Art Awards

Congratulations to the 23 students from Mercy’s Art Department who won 45 awards in this year’s Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition.


Nine Mercy students won a total of 14 gold keys (first place). Gold key winning pieces will also compete in New York for national awards in March. Gold key winning students are: Tessa Campau, Brenda Hernandez-Ramirez, Gianna Ivezaj, Yuri Lewis, Haley Lipscomb, Olivia Nazareno, Marie Schueneman, Victoria Straub, and Lola Walter. Other winning students include: Harshitha Arvapalli, Layan Ayad, Sydnei Brooks, Jamiesha Faulkner, Samantha Francis, Jocelyn Gursin, Zahra Jamil, Sophia Johnson, Sigita Jurgutis, Catie Kuchta, Audrey Laing, Isabella Larson, Liliana Sturgis, and Kelsey VanDenBerg.


Special congratulations to three senior portfolio students who received honors: Olivia Nazareno, Victoria Straub, and Lola Walter. Olivia Nazareno’s portfolio also received the special recognition of Best of Show.



Winning artworks will be on display at the Center Gallery on the campus of College for Creative Studies from February 12 - March 1, 2024. Public hours are Monday - Friday, 9-5, Saturday and Sunday noon to 5. An awards ceremony will be held on February 13, 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Detroit Film Theatre located within the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Alliance Catholic Foundation Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to Chisom Nwoke '25 who was named an Alliance Catholic Foundation Scholarship Winner and was awarded 2nd place ($4,500)! The Live It. Show It. Share It. Scholarship Contest was designed as part of the Alliance Catholic Credit Union sponsorship of the Catholic High School League and is run through the Alliance Catholic Foundation. The contest was open to any student planning to attend a Catholic High School League affiliated school for the 2024-2025 academic year. Students were asked to: Come up with an idea for an apparel item that features a message that inspires them and that they would be proud to wear and to share, and to explain why they think it would help to Unleash the Gospel.


Quiz Bowl

To kick off Catholic Schools Week, Mercy Quiz Bowl competed in the annual Heartland Catholic Scholar Bowl on Saturday, January 27. After 8 hours of grueling academic competition, Mercy A (back row) finished 11th overall, and Mercy B (front row) finished 8th overall. A special congratulations to Chisom Nwoke '25, who finished 7th place individually in the tournament with an impressive 345 points scored. Alyssa Chavez '26 finished 9th place overall with a final total of 295 points. Chisom and Alyssa were the highest-placing female competitors!

Latin Advisory Committee

Congratulations to Mrs. Lauren Marquard, our esteemed Latin teacher, for earning an invitation from the Michigan Department of Education to join the Latin Content Advisory Committee for the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification. What an outstanding opportunity for Mrs. Marquard to contribute her expertise to this state committee!

Sip & Shop 2024 Committee Needed

Anyone who would be interested in carrying out the Annual Holiday Sip & Shop Event next year, please contact the MMC Board at mercymothersclub@mhsmi.org. We had such a wonderful event this year and we are looking for organizers who would like to take what has been done and continue to expand.

DADS' CLUB

Pope Francis Center Volunteer Opportunities

We are coordinating with the Pope Francis Center in Detroit to create some service events. These approved opportunities are open to all Mercy students accompanied by a parent/guardian. They are looking for 8 people to help out each Saturday, so this will be four sets of parents/daughters. Two sets will help with food service and two sets will help with sorting and organizing donations.


The service dates are February 3rd, February 10th and March 9th at the Pope Francis Center from 6:45am to 11:15am. There is free parking right behind the Center in the University of Detroit Law School parking lot. The names of all volunteers will be reported to Mrs. Bennetts to ensure student service hours are properly recorded.

February Meeting

We would like to welcome all dads, guardians and grandfathers to the February Mercy Dads' Club February meeting! This is a perfect opportunity to meet other dads, see how you can get involved, hear what we have accomplished and what's coming up. Plus, stick around for euchre, poker and other card games while enjoying a drink and great company and 50/50 raffle.

AOD RISE DETROIT 2024

A Gathering of High School Youth

"Follow Me"

The Archdiocese of Detroit will once again be hosting RISE Detroit, a gathering of high school youth at Mercy High School. At RISE, high schoolers will unpack the theme based on Matthew 4:19, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."


February 4, 2024

9:00am-7:15pm

All 9-12th graders are invited to attend RISE! Teens must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (youth minister, high school campus minister, teacher, pastor, parent, etc.). The speakers include Pat Millea, Bishop Quinn, and Fr. Mario Amore. Activities include keynotes, powerful music and worship experiences, two workshop opportunities, small group discussion, and Liturgy.


Standard Admission: $35 for all participants: teens and adults. Includes lunch and dinner! Sign-up before January 5 to receive a 25% discount.

CLASS OF 2024 REMINDERS

Senior Class Alumnae Breakfast

This is a reminder of the 1/18/24 communication in regard to the upcoming Senior Class Alumnae Breakfast at Mercy HS on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. This annual tradition promises to be a wonderful opportunity for Seniors to meet alumnae from many walks of life and ask them questions about college, careers, and more. We look forward to sharing in this special sisterhood event!


Graduation Gown Approval

In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, every student must have her white graduation gown approved by Dr. Kreger or her assistant, Mrs. Wojcik. Reference the graduation gown requirement letter here. Please bring the garment to the Advancement Office or send a picture of the front and back of the dress, or a picture of you wearing the dress to cdkreger@mhsmi.org or mmwojcik@mhsmi.org.

The Marlin Shop will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school until 3:30pm. The Marlin Shop has an online store here which is open 24/7! You can choose from a variety of custom made to order Mercy gear. The uniform quarter zip will be available for purchase online and in the Marlin Shop.
