Copley Latin Day at U of M
| | | |
|
On April 10, nearly 50 Mercy Latin students attended the tenth annual Copley Latin Day at the University of Michigan. Students attended a college lecture on "Ancient Skies, Stellar Stories, Heavenly Mathematics" from Prof. Francesca Schironi, and they also analyzed ancient Roman papyrus in UM's Papyrology Lab, which is the largest papyrus collection in North America.
Later in the afternoon, students attended several workshop sessions, where they:
- Visited the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
- Surveyed the methods of cemetery excavations
- Studied Roman theater and created masks representing ancient characters and stereotypes
- Researched about Greek and Roman aqueducts in Anatolia
- Handled ancient artifacts from Roman Egypt
- Attended a lecture on the Greco-Roman concept of free will and compared it to modern understanding
-
Investigated how scientists use Greek and Latin in naming new plants and animals, like Lusius malfoyi and Aname aragog
You can view more photos and learn more about Mercy's Latin program on Mercy JCL's website.

Only under serious circumstances, that are out of the student's control, will a student be permitted to take an exam other than at the scheduled time. Students must initiate that request by completing and submitting a form (available at the Reception Area) to be signed by a parent, verifying the need for a change in test time, accompanied by appropriate documentation (i.e. medical documentation, airline tickets, etc...). The request must be submitted two weeks before the final and approved by the Associate Principal of Academic Affairs and the teacher involved.
If a student is simply changing the day/hour to ease their exam schedule on a given day, (but not to finish earlier) an email notification from the teacher, approving this arrangement, to Ms. McMaster is all that is necessary.

Graduation Ticket Pick-Up
This is a reminder of the 4/18-24 communication here in regard to graduation ticket pick up beginning Friday, May 3. All graduation obligations must be completed.
Prom Sponsorship Opportunities
This is a reminder of the 4/10/24 communication here in regard to Prom Sponsorship information. We hope to keep Prom ticket prices affordable so that all students can enjoy this cherished tradition. Currently, we are about $5,000 shy of reaching this goal. With this in mind, we are asking to partner with our Senior parents and local businesses as we roll out a new sponsorship opportunity!
Graduation Gown Approval
In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, every student must have her white graduation gown approved by Dr. Kreger or her assistant, Mrs. Wojcik. Graduation gown requirement letter found here. Please bring the dress to the Advancement Office or send a picture of the front and back of the dress, or a picture of you wearing the dress to cdkreger@mhsmi.org or mmwojcik@mhsmi.org.
Important End of the Semester Academic Dates
Friday, May 17
Senior English papers are due by 11:59pm. ALL Senior work must be submitted and graded by midnight (Friday, May 17) except for final exams/projects/presentations.
There will not be a “no testing period” for Seniors, but once a final experience is completed classwork can be given and graded but further homework (work to complete, additional reading, preparation for a quiz or test) should not be extensive. This will allow students time to work on other presentations, and projects and prepare for final exams.
May 20 - May 22 Senior Final Exam
A final exam experience for Seniors needs to occur on one of these days. Seniors are required to be present in class on May 20, 21, and 22 for final presentations, review days, or final exams/papers. This will be determined by the classroom teacher. Seniors will be able to come and go as they please but must enter and exit the lobby doors after school begins at 8:00 am. Some sample scenarios: 1) A senior could have a review day on Monday, and the exam on Tuesday and therefore would be expected in class on both days, 2) A final paper could be turned in on May 17 and the Senior would not need to attend class since the final experience is complete, 3) Final presentations are held May 20-22 and all students are expected to be in class all days to present or critique other student presentations, 4) A final exam is given May 21 and students do not attend on May 20.
May 23
All Seniors are expected to be in attendance for Honors Convocation in order to participate in their Adviser Party and Moving Up.
May 30
Senior Final Grades are due by May 30 at 9 am. Transcripts will be sent to the college designated on the Senior Survey on June 4.
Survey
All Seniors must complete the Senior Survey (using Mercy Gmail) by Monday, May 6 in order to receive graduation tickets.
Senior All Night Party
Thank you for all who ordered the lawn signs! Orders are now closed. Signs will be distributed in early May at school. For those still interested, we have a limited number of non-personalized signs available. We will have them at the Baccalaureate Mass for purchase or reach out to SANP via email.

Action Alert: Non-Public Schools Safety and Mental Health Funds in Jeopardy
Nonpublic schools across Michigan will lose $18 million in school safety and mental health funding if the current state budget proposal is approved, prompting the Michigan Catholic Conference and the Michigan Association of Nonpublic Schools to issue an Action Alert to grassroots advocates.
Mercy High School has been a recipient of this important funding that has helped us to continually enhance school safety and security measures. We urge you to send a message to your lawmaker to let them know how important it is to include non-public schools in this opportunity and ensure the protection of all Michigan students! All Michigan students deserve to be safe!
