Social-Emotional Learning for K-16+

Chicago International Charter School – Bucktown, featured on NBC's TODAY, has significant academic and behavioral results from teachers' being trained in and using social-emotional learning, a daily "Feel Trip." Children from the lowest performance levels have thrived.

Social-Emotional Learning is an important component of successful mentoring, coaching, and teaching. Previously shared with permission, MENTOR Nebraska developed this customizable SEL training for the PALS Mentoring Program in Claremore.

To evaluate the SEL of its mentees, AARP Foundation's Experience Corps values DESSA as pre- and post-tests. Ask your school about The Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) Comprehensive System for K-8. Anecdotally, the "sweet spot" of the AARP program's intervention is second through fifth grade.

Older youths and adults who missed skills may benefit from SEL development presented in an age- or situation-appropriate manner.
Disabilities (and Inclusion) - All Ages
Permanent, Temporary, and Situational
Invisible or visible and variable in degree, disabilities can be cognitive, physical, or a combination. Disabilities can separate people from physical and social environments. Through personal biases and anxiety, we can unintentionally ostracize others. Mentoring is inclusive.
Cognitive
Examples: Concussions, tumors, multiple sclerosis, migraines, substance abuse, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), mental illness, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s disease, Tourette’s, Huntington's, muscular dystrophies, meningitis and encephalitis, strokes, neurodevelopment disorders, e.g., aphasia, autism, attention deficit, dyslexia, dyscalculia, intellectual and memory loss.
