Greetings from NNJR President David Julis

Having just celebrated our freedom from slavery with Passover we now go on to a more solemn day of remembrance with Yom HaShoah. FJMC created the Shoah Yellow Candle Program 43 years ago to keep alive the memory of the Six Million who perished in the Shoah.  Now, more than ever, with the rise in antisemitism, it is imperative that we continue to remember those that perished. The program not only serves as a reminder, but also helps raise awareness and funds for programs that educate. For example, my club, East Brunswick Jewish Center, solicits donations which are in turn donated to Rutgers University Bildner Center for Jewish Life. If your club does something special, please share, as we are in this together. I want to thank all those that participated in the Yellow Candle Program with special thanks to our chair, Glenn Wohl. Yasher Koach!

One of the key things about Men’s Club, is that it’s just not about involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life, it’s about bonding, making new friends and having fun, too. With that said, we have Go-Karts on May 23rd at the fastest Indoor Go-Kart Track in Edison NJ. We’re almost at capacity for the event – over 50 guys have signed up – so why haven’t you?

Also, and I can’t say this enough…………. Retreat, Retreat, Retreat……We will be having our 12th Quad-Region Biennial Retreat from June 7th-9th at Camp Zeke in the Poconos. At just $200 for first timers, it’s a virtual bargain! You’ll learn, bond, eat, drink and have fun with your closest friends from NY Metro, NNJR, Mid-Atlantic and Hudson Valley. Just picture Havdalah under the stars around a huge bonfire. What a beautiful thing!

And, save the date for the President’s Dinner on June 19th at B’nai Shalom in West Orange, NJ, where we honor the outgoing and incoming club Presidents and the NNJR Board.

This is what Men’s Club is about. We remember and honor those who came before us. We honor those who are with us today and going forward.

Again, and I can’t say this enough, share your events. Send your flyers to communicationsvp@nnjr.org so that we can publish them in this newsletter and put them on the NNJR website calendar. Participate and attend events at other Clubs. Meet new people. Share ideas. Help each other. Get out of your comfort zone. Do events with other Clubs. There is no reason to have to reinvent the wheel.

B’Shalom,

David

Quad-Region Biennial retreat

RETREAT!! June 7-9th in the Poconos

Guys, the time to register is now! Retreat is just a month away and will be a great way for you to get away and spend time with the guys.

There will be lots of camaraderie and opportunity to meet our brothers from neighboring regions (Middle Atlantic, Hudson Valley and NY Metro).

Also, there will be learning (you might hear a few mens' voices) and there will be recreation.

And of course, the coup d'etat, Saturday night BONFIRE. Sip and shmooze with your buddhism new and old, under the stars with the ambers reaching up to the sky.

Any questions, contact Rob Blitzer (rblitzer@fjmc.org) or David Glass (dglass@fjmc.org).

AFMDA Challenge Grant

Dear Friends,

On November 7, 2023, we issued a challenge grant to the member clubs of the Northern NJ Region. The region will match each clubs’ donations to the American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) up to $200. If all of our clubs participated, that would allow all of us together to donate over $11,000 to AFMDA. At the time, we were all hopeful that the war in Gaza would be over quickly, unfortunately that is not the case as we all know.

The need is still there. As of now, 10 clubs have made the donation, and another 4 clubs have made a commitment. We need every club to step up and make the donation and send me an email at jlschul01@gmail.com saying that you did it. That is all we ask. Please participate.

FJMC Walking Challenge

The FJMC Walking Challenge will begin on April 21, 2024 (Passover) and finish on June 10, 2024 (Shavuot). During your virtual 7-week journey from Haifa to Jerusalem you will visit a number of cities in Israel including Haifa, Hadera, Netanya, Tel AvivYafo, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Sderot, and Jerusalem. This virtual journey will cover a total of 327,000 steps!

Each member who participates in the challenge will need to record their activity on the Wellworks website or mobile app. Instructions for logging onto the website portal is attached and for the app is attached. Those instructions also include how to register for the challenge. If your device monitors your activity, follow instructions as to how to automatically sync with Wellworks. You may also record your steps (and other activities) manually. Please read the manuals carefully as most questions are answered there. Feel free to reach out if you need any assistance in getting set up.

The challenge leaderboard will be determined by your Club team’s total average. This is automatically calculated on the challenge dashboard by taking the total number of steps the team has walked and dividing it by the number of team members participating. Here is a summary of steps from city to city, but the main thing is to reach the end goal 327,000 steps over the 7-week period.

Haifa to Hadera – 57,400 steps

Hadera to Netanya – 22,600 steps

Netanya to Tel Aviv, Yafo – 45,000 steps

Tel Aviv, Yafo – Rehovot - 26,000 steps

Rehovot to Ashdod – 27,400 steps

Ashdod to Ashkelon – 26,400 steps

Ashkelon to Sderot – 24,400 steps

Sderot to Jerusalem – 97,800 steps

More details coming from the FJMC on April 8th, but you can review the Wellness Challenge User Guide now.

Club Communications With The Region

So, your club is having a program, and you want other clubs to know about it?

You would like some regional officers to attend your Men’s Club Shabbat?

You just want the NNJR leadership to know you’re doing something?

Here’s how you can keep the NNJR Board connected with your Men’s Club activities:

Every club should include the following email forwarding addresses in their mailing list:

president@nnjr.org – Keep the President informed about club events so they may attend if possible.

execvp@nnjr.org – Keep the Executive Vice President informed about club events so they may attend if possible.

communicationsvp@nnjr.org – Keep the Communications Vice President informed about club events so they may add it to this newsletter, etc. to keep other clubs informed.

Furthermore, each club should include the appropriate Rosh email address out of the following:

roshnorth@nnjr.org – For those clubs in the Northern District.

roshcentral@nnjr.org – For those clubs in the Central District.

roshsouth@nnjr.org – For those clubs in the Southern District.

This would be so your Rosh can be informed about club events so they may attend if possible.

Please see this chart to determine your club’s district:
