SOARING into the Great Outdoors

“What a day…WHAT A DAY!” was how one participant described the SOAR program at the End of Year Retreat that took place yesterday at Camp Long.

SOAR, which stands for the Shared Outdoor Adventure program, brings together people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s before age 65 for the opportunity to connect with each other while enjoying being active in nature. SOAR is a program of the UW Memory & Brain Wellness Center, with hikes led by a Lifelong Recreation Specialist from Seattle Parks and Recreation.

“I’m glad that we’re all together, and we’re all positive and doing something fun," said another participant.

So many people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at a younger age feel alone. What's more, the programs and services designed for people with dementia are typically for people much older than them. It’s easy to feel out of place. SOAR centers these younger folks and provides an active outdoor opportunity well-matched for their physical abilities.

Near the end of the retreat, in the reflection circle, a participant stretched their arms out to the sky. “Today was about everything - Big – Very, Very, Very big. Much bigger than I am – you know?"

It’s been a wonderful year piloting the program thanks to funding from the I’m Still Here Foundation, and we’re excited to bring in new participants as we kick off the new season this summer! Our 2024-2025 season runs from July 2024 - June 2025. Join us from 10-10:30 a.m. on Thursday June 27, online by Zoom, to learn more about the program, meet staff and other participants, and get your questions answered. Sign up here | Flyer

Latest Milestones in Dementia Awareness Program

Dementia Friends is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. 114 people joined the movement and became Dementia Friends this past month across Washington state! It’s energizing to see much-needed awareness continue to spread throughout the state.

Dementia Friends Champion, Josie Beierl, became a Dementia Friends Champion so she could help lead information sessions out in the community. “Becoming a Dementia Friends Champion was important to me because I wanted to get the accurate information out there. I want to help de-stigmatize the topic and normalize the conversation so it can be something easily discussed.” The interest is growing and more information sessions are being scheduled across different sectors throughout the communities. To see a list of upcoming June sessions, click here.

Today, in the June Garden Discovery Program in Maude's Garden at the Memory Hub, we focused on mindfulness, being "in the present" together, and discovering how time in nature can make us feel better, and learning new things about herbs.

June's Herb of the Month is Apple Mint, which is a species of mint that has a sweet smell and fuzzy leaves. We learned that Mojito Mint is actually a hybrid of the apple mint and the spearmint species. Mint, in general, has long been used as a folk tea remedy to help stomach trouble, invigorate a tired mind, and relieve headaches. Participants enjoyed an herbal tea brewed with fresh mint and created dried fruit window hangings.

A partnership between Seattle Parks and Recreation and UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center. The Garden Discovery Program is made possible by support from Aegis Living Assisted Living and Memory Care communities.
