As we finish our last day of school for the 2023-2024 school year, I cannot help but reflect on this year at THE GREAT MEMORIAL MIDDLE SCHOOL. We have made it our mission over this last year to make MEMORIAL a school that focuses on rigorous academics, safety and having our students and community see our school as a place they want to be and feel like they are home.
We have held several events during the school year that some of our students have never had the opportunity to experience, like our Pep Rallies, Dances, Field Trips and our FAST FEST that you will read more about in this edition.

We have seen great success from these efforts this year. Our school survey ratings are up at an all time high and in many places we are scoring as one of the highest schools in our district. Our test scores are rolling in each day and we have so many students who scored PROFICIENT or higher for the first time in their academic careers.
We are so proud of our STUDENTS and thankful for our PARENTS, TEACHERS and COMMUNITY. We are looking forward to a great summer and hope everyone enjoys some time off to rest, relax and recharge. Before you know it, August will be here and we will be starting again.

8th Grade Social Highlights |

This past Friday we celebrated our 8th graders with our annual 8th Grade Social. Students selected the theme of HOLLYWOOD GLAM and GLAMOROUS did our students look! Thank you to all our sponsors for this event and making it a special night for our 8th graders. |

To celebrate STATE TESTING being DONE, we recognized all of our students who completed testing with FAST FEST. Bounce houses, cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones were all part of the fun, where each grade level came out to our track to enjoy and celebrate their efforts!
We also invited our soon-to-be SOLDIERS from our neighbors next door, Catalina Elementary, to join in the fun!
* The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) includes VPK through grade 10 Reading and VPK through grade 8 Mathematics assessments.

We are very excited to announce the 2024 Florida Future Chef Student Cook-Off, a National School Lunch Program competition! This prestigious student cooking competition showcases Florida commodities and talented young chefs statewide. In fact, our 2023 Florida Future Chef Champion, 10-year-old Remy, is currently a finalist on Master Chef Junior Season 9! This is an incredible opportunity for young student chefs, and we encourage you to share this event with your elementary and middle school principals to help ensure every interested child has an opportunity to enter and win!
Who is eligible? All students between the ages of 7 and 13 are invited to submit a video of them preparing their favorite dish.
Timing: It’s on! Entries can be submitted now through July 12. Three finalists will compete in Tampa September 9-11, 2024, for the title of “2024 Florida Future Chef.”
How to apply? For all contest rules and to apply, students visit https://floridafuturechef.com to submit a two-to-five-minute video showing their preparation of a favorite dish, using in-season Florida commodities.
Prizes: Prizes include Florida Prepaid College Savings Plans for all top three contestants, complimentary accommodations for the contestants and their parents at the Epicurean Hotel in Tampa, and much more!
This is an incredible opportunity not only for the competing students, but also to bring more awareness to the National School Lunch Program.

Learn From Mistakes And Turn Them Into Future Success |
|
|
As our SOLDIERS look back on the 2023-2024 school year, along the way there may have been a few mistakes. Mistakes are bound to happen. After all, nobody's perfect. But you can learn from mistakes and turn those missteps into future wins. Here are some tips to think about ahead of the 2024-2025 school year.
* No matter how successful you are as a student, athlete, musician, employee, whatever it may be, there are going to be ups and downs. Your ability to weather the downs may be the most important life skill you need. (This is also referred to as RESILIENCE.) Remember SOLDIERS, there's no straight path to success.
* Students should embrace learning from failure rather than beating themselves up if things go wrong.
* Don't use the word failure. Instead, view "setbacks" as challenges and opportunities.
* To learn from mistakes you have to admit them first. In fact, you may need to tell a family member, teacher or a coach that you were wrong and you will learn from it. Honesty is key to learning from your mistakes.
* Always remember that in life, not everything will go as planned. The famous author Louisa May Alcott once said, "I am not afraid of storms, for I'm learning to sail my ship." So remember Soldiers … There will be storms out there, but you can be smart about reality and learn to navigate those storms.
* Keep in mind that with mistakes, you are never alone. Others have been in the same boat. All people experience setbacks and if you talk to your friends about it, you might be surprised how many might say, "Oh, that happened to me, too."
* Lastly, forgive yourself—you're a human being. Mistakes are part of life.
