Monday, March 26, 2018, in Steubenville, Ohio. Lawrence (Larry), son of Lawrence and Teresa Meagher, was born in Queens, New York on November 20, 1928. Larry began working for Fireman’s Fund Insurance in Manhattan as a high school student and worked there until his retirement in 1984. While there he met the love of his life Marie Whelan whom he married on August 28, 1954. They were married until her death on December 1, 1993.
Larry served in the United States Naval Reserve for seven years. Larry and Marie raised their seven children in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY. He was ordained a deacon for the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn on December 3, 1977. Nine years before his ordination Larry and Marie experienced a new awakening of their faith through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and their involvement in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. In the years that followed they also were involved in the the pro-life movement, visiting the sick and served the Church in various other ways. After Larry’s retirement, he and Marie moved to Hudson, NY, and served at St. Mary’s Church.
In 1989 they moved to Steubenville for Christian community and to be closer to family. Larry continued to serve in hospital ministry, as a prison chaplain and at his parish. He treasured his time with his men’s group and was always available to encourage his grandchildren and many others. His hobbies were golf, listening to Irish music, being a Mets & Pirates fan and crossword puzzles. He took much pleasure in gathering his family together with the song, “This is the Day that the Lord Has Made”.
Deacon Larry is survived by his seven children: Raymond (and Lucy) Meagher of Dumont, New Jersey, Francis Meagher of Elmont, New York, Mary Therese (and Craig) Anderson of San Jose, California, Joan (and Shawn) Scott of Steubenville, Ohio, Father Joseph Meagher of St. Antoninus Church in Newark, New Jersey, Terese (and Darwin) Rigel of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Thomas Meagher of Carrollton, Ohio.
