Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 6 No. 21 | May 24, 2024

Notes from the Editor:

One more week until the kickoff of hurricane season but our season continues! This is a big weekend for fun and sun but first a time to remember and honor military personnel who gave their lives while serving our country. Do you remember when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day?

From Wikipedia, in case you've forgotten: "The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. ...the holiday was proclaimed by Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the Civil War."

This Arts Blast offers news of plenty of things to do but there are far more that we can't fit in. Make the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com a frequent stop.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're responsible for promoting an arts-related event, send in details using the format at the end of this email. There's no charge for basic calendar listings but your advertising flyer that includes a link to your website will do more to catch readers' attention. Email for advertising information in Arts Blast and Arts Blast on the Air.
Please support small, local businesses. Arts Blast is one of them, so if you have an event coming up, or something artsy to sell or teach, consider advertising it in Arts Blast and/or Arts Blast on the Air!
Jazz Concert at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach
Sunday, May 26 at 4:00 PM.
Get ready, jazz lovers! First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach will host a jazz concert on Sunday, May 26 at 4:00 PM. Long known for its musical outreach, the church at 520 Royal Palm Boulevard will be contributing the talents of its Director of Music, Dr. Jacob Craig to an all-star Jazz Quartet. Craig will perform on jazz piano, with Miami Dade College professor Claudio Osorio on trumpet. The quartet also includes retired Los Angeles percussionist, Tony Miranda, who played with Madonna and Neil Diamond, along with Indian River Charter High School teacher, Dave Mundy on bass. The concert centerpiece is Claude Bolling’s Toot Suite for trumpet and jazz piano. The six-movement piece, premiered by French virtuoso trumpeter Maurice Andre in 1980, is considered an influential work in the trumpet repertoire. Osorio will perform on multiple trumpets, cornet and flugelhorn during the piece. The audience will also be treated to “C Jam Blues” by Duke Ellington, “One Note Samba” by Jobim, and “Misty” by Errol Garner. Admission to the Jazz Quartet concert is free. For more information, call (772) 562-9088.
Dr. Jacob Craig is eager to display his versatility at the keyboard. The Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach is known to delight churchgoers and crowds alike with his virtuosic skill on piano and organ. He is particularly talented at jazz piano, which he frequently performs during services.
“Our rehearsals have been phenomenal,” said Dr. Craig. “This is the first time we are performing together, but every member is a successful musician in their own right. The audience is going to be wowed by this concert.”
The Jazz Quartet concert is just one of many events sponsored or hosted by First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, known for its musical and artistic outreach to the Central Florida community.
Rock ‘N’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip: Photographs by Robert Landau
Through September 1, 2024
Be transported to Los Angeles’ celebrated Sunset Strip of the last 1960s and 70s and immerse yourself in rock and roll nostalgia with the summer exhibition Rock ‘N’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip: Photographs by Robert Landau.
In those years, the Sunset Strip was the heart and soul of a vibrant music scene – home to record companies, record stores, and legendary nightclubs. Through the lens of his camera, photographer Robert Landau chronicled these pop masterpieces that only lasted a few weeks before being dismantled. White-washed, and pained over with newer images.
The VBMA exhibition comprises 50 photographs; four of which are presented on a monumental scale. Some of the musical artists represented on the billboards include: The Beatles, Donna Summer, The Eagles, John Lennon, Madonna, Queen, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, and many more.
Celebration 15 years of entertaining audiences with music, the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of Conductor and Artistic Director, Aaron T. Collins, will assemble a group of 150 musicians on stage for a powerful program featuring the works of Tchaikovsky, Marquez and Marshall, along with a world premier work from composer Kevin Wilt.
The program will include Christopher Marshall’s “Aue!”, originally commissioned for the orchestra’s 10th Anniversary, Marquez’s “Conga del Fuego” and Wilt’s “Imagined Adventures: March at the West River.
"This has been a whirlwind season for us," said Collins. "We have a terrific anniversary concert planned, although 150 musicians playing Tchaikovsky might just raise the roof.”
This final concert of the season over 100 youth musicians will perform side-by-side their professional SCSO counterparts with composers Christopher Marshall and Kevin Wilt scheduled to be in attendance.
Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Concertgoers 18 years of age or under or with a valid college ID are admitted free.
McKee Botanical Garden Waterlily Collection Honored
The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society awarded the distinction to
McKee Botanical Garden which now joins an elite group of only seven botanical gardens in the world recognized for their excellence in waterlilies and water gardening.
Waterlilies have been celebrated in the pools, ponds and watery mazes of McKee since the garden first opened in 1932. These living collections have astonishing colors, mysterious openings and varied pedal and leaf patterns and sizes and have captivated visitors since McKee reintroduced the collection when the garden re-opened in 2001.
The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society (IWGS) formed in 1984 as a group of water gardening enthusiasts who wanted to enhance and expand the information available about waterlilies and water gardening. The immediate success of the organization led to spectacular interest and growth and now enables IWGS to host annual symposiums, provide grants and funding and networking opportunities for hybridizers and growers.
McKee has courted recognition by the IWGS for many years, with a determined effort by McKee’s aquatic expert, Nikki Wojtowicz to meet the high standards of the IWGS. Of the 100 plus varieties grown at McKee, 50 were identified in the past as worthy of distinction by the IWGS and this year, 48 of those 50 received Certified Collection of Excellence. McKee’s waterlily collection is now one of only seven in the world with this exceptional distinction
This important recognition highlights McKee Botanical Garden’s commitment to horticultural excellence and its exceptional contributions to the study and display of waterlilies and aquatic plants under McKee’s director of horticulture and research, Andreas Daehnick. Nikki Wojtowicz will continue her education in this specialized field as an attendee of this year’s IWGS Symposium in Reading, UK July 16 – 20.
McKee Botanical Garden’s 19th Annual Waterlily Celebration is Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. In addition to the spectacular and award-winning waterlily display the celebration will feature a photo contest, repotting demonstrations, plant vendors, plein air artists, wire art, wood crafts and handmade baskets. The Garden Café will be open from 8:45 am until 3:00 pm.
For Lee Ritenour, love for the guitar began when he was 8. By 12, he was serious about playing and his father found him some of the best teachers around. The guitar scene at the time was a master class for the young musician. Great guitar playing was everywhere he turned and he loved them all.
For Ritenour, those early days were only the beginning of a dazzling five-decade career that has seen him as an enfant terrible of ‘70s fusion, a crossover star of the ‘80s pop chart, an honorary exponent of Brazilian jazz, and the fingers behind the ‘90s supergroup, Fourplay. He’s a Grammy Award winner with 16 nominations and a Jazz Society honoree.
Dave Grusin is considered one of the top 10 film scorers of his generation, Grusin is also renowned as a jazz artist and co-founder of the independent record label GRP. He has written over sixty film scores, including The Graduate, Tootsie, The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Firm, Havana, Heaven Can Wait, and On Golden Pond. Having received 8 Academy Award nominations, he won an Oscar in 1988 for The Milagro Bean Field War, featuring guitarist Angel Romero.
Event schedules can change, often at almost the last minute. Verify, double check, and then do it again before you head out the door. And when you do go out, take a mask. Without one, you risk being turned away.
