The Ohio Municipal League is excited to launch its new Statehouse Leaders Academy, which will help prepare current municipal leaders to be the next generation of state legislators.
If you're a current mayor or council member who has interest in a potential run for the Ohio General Assembly -- or if you just want to learn more about how state and municipal government overlap -- this is an opportunity to learn more.
The Ohio General Assembly needs leaders with a municipal perspective.
The General Assembly impacts the operation of Ohio’s cities and villages through changes to local tax policy, proposals that encroach on existing Home Rule Authority, and even the shifting of additional pension burdens onto municipal taxpayers. But some municipal officials do not understand the operations of state government, and too few members of the Ohio General Assembly have experience and perspective as municipal leaders.
OML's Statehouse Leaders Academy will be a bipartisan cohort of municipal leaders who have an interest in learning more about the role and importance of state government in the successful operation of local communities and want to know more about the process of potentially seeking election to the Ohio Statehouse.
Those who participate can expect quarterly briefings -- typically webinars, but sometimes in-person briefings that correspond to OML events -- on state government to address specific topics that include:
- State Municipal Public Policy Review
- State budgeting 101
- State healthcare, economic development, energy & education policy review
- Statehouse stakeholders and the Ohio legislative and elective process
