The Federal Government is treating Canadians to a grand April Fool's joke early this week with the scheduled increase in the federal carbon tax. It should lead to a 3 cent per litre increase in the price of gasoline and 4 cent per litre increase in the cost of diesel fuel. Unfortunately, it’s not a joke and the tax didn’t go away when the clock struck noon on April Fool's day, it just increased the cost of living for us all.

It was a pretty exciting month around the DBOT office as our own Diana Morris as well as regular DBOT contributor Bill McCutcheon speaking on behalf of the Dufferin Federation of Agriculture were quoted in a front-page Toronto Star article on some of the inequities on the aforementioned carbon tax. The Federal government quite arbitrarily decided that both Orangeville and Mono are urban areas so residents here will get their carbon rebate at a lower rate. I suppose the ever-popular Camilla to Relessey subway makes that fair.

The carbon tax is not meant to be a theme this month but DBOT is going to begin lobbying on your behalf regarding the small business carbon tax rebate. The rates are ambiguous at best and information on when it will actually flow is hard to find.

Keep watching the DBOT website and our social media channels for information on the upcoming Business Excellence Awards which will take place later on in May. A lot of work goes into this event behind the scenes in a great event that helps celebrate the excellence in our members.

Not long after that, you should start seeing information on our Annual Golf tournament. It is certainly one of my favourite DBOT events and a great chance to network with your fellow members. Hopefully one of these years soon #1 son will be good enough to carry team OPC back to victory!

Enjoy doing business in the county this month. I hope that the sunshine that is shining brightly outside my window as I type this makes for a busy spring for everyone!
