December 4th Presentation: 
Carmen Underwood presents painter, 
Joaquin Sorolla

 

Through her Art History and Art Appreciation classes, Carmen Underwood has developed a keen interest in the lives and art of famous Impressionist painters.  Her presentation for the December VAST meeting will feature the art of Spanish painter, Joaquin Sorolla.


 
Carmen Underwood is a retired Spanish and French instructor at the High School level.  She has also taught Spanish as an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Texas and North Central Texas College.  She majored in Latin American and Iberian Peninsula Studies and received both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.   Her post-graduate course work was completed through a Study Abroad program in Madrid, Spain.  Underwood has travelled extensively to Spain, Mexico, France, and Portugal.  She was recognized as a Master Teacher by the Illinois Foreign Language Teacher's Association  and was a professional  presenter at many foreign language conferences sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.  

 

Underwood joined VAST in 2004 and served as First Vice-President in charge of programs from 2006-2008.  She has taken Art

History and Art Appreciation classes, and has also taken watercolor classes with Jo Williams and Mary Emerson.  Carmen and her husband, Dr. T. Jervis Underwood, who is a member of the Denton Poets Assembly, have paired their work for Merging Visions II, III, and IV.  Her paintings have also been featured in the 2011 and 2015 Vast calendars. 


 
The meeting is Thursday, December 4 - 7:00 to 9:00pm at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts (P-A CVA) in Denton.

Thirty works were chosen from one hundred seventy one entries for the 125 Mile Exhibition! The letters of acceptance have been sent out to those accepted. January 6, 2015 is the take-in date. Anyone willing to help that day would be appreciated.  


 

Exhibit date is January 16-February 27, 2015.

The opening reception is January 16, 2015 , 5:30-7:30 PM in the Gough Gallery, Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts.

Our Sunshine Committee is looking for note cards created by our members, to be used to send to members who need cheering or well wishes. Donations are appreciated and can be brought to any of our VAST meetings.

Interested in being a part of the 2015 Merging Visions Exhibition?

All 'pairings' are to be completed by December 4th.  We would like participating artists to have signed their contracts by the December 4th VAST meeting.  


 
All other contract information describing the work of art (title, dimensions, media used, price, etc.) is due January 17.  Art images are due February 1st.

"Noble Visions" exhibition at Barnes & Noble Booksellers Cafe - Golden Triangle Mall 

Artwork of Isabel Cano.

Isabel paints as she perceives her surroundings to be.  In her artist statement, she has to say that "My series, Flowers, is a study of shape, color, light and shadow. I create these paintings to give the flowers a much longer life, in hopes that more people will get to see the one that captivated me.  The purpose of the bigger scale is to create an impact that will force as many viewers as possible, to see the beauty that would otherwise go unnoticed."

"Outside the Box" exhibition at Point Bank Blackbox Theater  
Annual Holiday Exhibit on display through January 9.

Exhibiting artists include: Tina Alvarez, Kathryn Kerekes, Ashley Risica, Carol Rowley, Carol Stoecker, and Jo Williams. The work represents a variety of media including acrylic, photography, and watercolor. 

 

This exhibit is designed to complement Kid's Christmas at the Black Box, the Denton Community Theater Theater School presentation of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Production dates are December 5 - 7. VAST members will also provide a wall mural of a Christmas tree for the festivities.

The Point Bank Black Box Theatre Exhibition is co-sponsored by Denton Community Theatre and VAST, and is located at 318 E. Hickory.

Hours: Monday & Wednesday, 1:00 - 4:00 pm

Friday 10:30 am - 1:00 pm.  Art may also be viewed during any of the performances at the Black Box.

Linda Chidsey had work at the Marshall-McPhail Gallery in Marshall Motors, Dallas this past month.


The MFA Graduation Exhibition of Angelia Ford will be held at Texas Woman's University Art Galleries (East/West) from December 3 - December 12.  The public is invited to the reception: Wed., December 3, 5-9pm. 


 

Nel Dorn Byrd, James J. Johnson, Jr. and Jo Williams all have work in the exhibition at the Oxide Gallery. The opening is December 6th, 6-8pm. The public is invited.

VADO is a day where members may come paint at the CVA from 9:15am - 3pm, approximately two mornings a month.  There is no instructor, it is not a workshop...just an art gathering. 


You may paint, sketch, quilt or what ever creative endeavor you desire in the fellowship with your artist friends.  Lunch and fellowship are the best parts!

The cost is $10 a year, or $1 a session if you just want to drop in every now and then.  Pay with your dues, or you can send $10 to:
