Get to Know Your MAFP President,
Dr. John Vanderloo
| |
|
The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) proudly introduces Dr. John P. F. H. Vanderloo as the 2024 - 2025 President. A family physician from Madison, Mississippi, Dr. Vanderloo has been a committed MAFP member since 2006.
Inspired by his late father, a dedicated family physician, Dr. Vanderloo's passion for medicine was sparked early. As a child, Dr. Vanderloo observed his father's caring interactions with patients and even accompanied him on house calls. This early exposure to the compassionate side of medicine left a lasting impression, and that, coupled with his experiences as a patient tech in his father's clinic, led him to pursue a career in family medicine.
For Dr. Vanderloo, the most fulfilling part of being a family physician is making patients feel heard. He believes understanding the "why" behind a dianosis leads to more effective treatment and patient education. His commitment to listening and understanding his patients' concerns ensures they receive comprehensive care tailored to their unique needs.
Dr. Vanderloo's involvement with MAFP has been a cornerstone of his professional journey. He recalls how attending MAFP as a chief resident reignited his passion for family medicine. The camaraderie and shared experiences with fellow family physicians have been invaluable, allowing him to stay connected with the broader medical community in Mississippi. Through MAFP, Dr. Vanderloo has found a platform to advocate for both patients and the profession, working alongside mentors and peers to improve healthcare across the state.
When he’s not caring for patients, Dr. Vanderloo cherishes spending time with his wife Christina and their four children. Whether they are watching movies, traveling, hiking, or boating, family time is a priority. He also enjoys indulging in his hobby of dreaming about antique cars and has a surprising passion for Lego, which started as a joke and has since grown into a collection that he proudly displays in his clinic.
If given the chance to dine with any historical figures, Dr. Vanderloo would choose Saint Pope John Paul II and Jimmy Buffett. Both individuals have left a profound impact on him—Pope John Paul II for his leadership and grace in suffering, and Jimmy Buffett for his laid-back approach to life, balancing hard work with the enjoyment of simple pleasures, especially at the beach.
Dr. Vanderloo's presidency marks an exciting chapter for MAFP, where his blend of compassion, dedication, and leadership promises to make a lasting impact on the organization and the health of Mississippians

Celebrating 75 Years: A Diamond Legacy in Family Medicine Serves as Great Theme for Annual Meeting
During the MAFP Annual Meeting, we enjoyed Celebrating 75 Years: A Diamond Legacy in Family Medicine and really played up the diamond theme throughout the four-day meeting.
2023 - 2024 MAFP President, Dr. Stephen Hammack, and his wife welcome kids in their families dressed in their MAFP baseball jerseys at MAFP Family Fun Night at the Diamond held at the Marina Beach. The kids were given baseball themed goodies at the entrance, and the evening was filled with water toys, sand building, face painting, airbrush tattoos, bubbles, and kid friendly food.

Our theme decorations were a hit! We invited our attendees to use our theme decorations for photo opportunities throughout the event. Attendees enjoyed the walk down memory lane as they reflected on 75 years of MAFP with a walk through our MAFP library.
If you have attended our annual meeting before, you know our attendees always receive a MAFP t-shirt with our logo theme. We love seeing our members and families show them off during the event. It's a MAFP tradition that on the first day of CME, our attendees pose for a group photo. This photo is utilized for the cover of our membership directory.
We were thrilled to have 86 exhibits join us this year! As our attendees know, our exhibit hall helps enhance our meeting with extra activities for our members and families, so we genuinely appreciate their support. We love seeing our exhibitors get in the spirit and decorate their booth according to our theme. Our exhibitors even join us in our Loot and Scoot event, where we invite the kids into the exhibit hall and grab all the loot they can in 30 minutes from our generous exhibitors.
MAFP Members Earn FAAFP Honor
MAFP is pleased to have four members achieve the Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP Past President Dr. John Meiggs of Alabama presented the Degree of Fellow during the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Annual Meeting in July.
Drs. Patrick Whipple of Madison, Sarah Hudson of Hattiesburg, Terry Moran, Jr. of Hattiesburg, and Emily Landrum of Starkville received the award during the MAFP Awards Luncheon during the annual session.
Established in 1971, the AAFP Degree of Fellow recognizes family physicians who have distinguished themselves through service to family medicine and ongoing professional development. This year’s fellowship class brings the total number of AAFP Fellows to more than 18,000 nationwide. AAFP Fellowship entitles the physician to use the honorary designation, “Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians,” or “F.A.A.F.P.”
Criteria for receiving the AAFP Degree of Fellow consist of a minimum of six years of membership in the organization, extensive continuing medical education, participation in public service programs outside medical practice, conducting original research and serving as a teacher in family medicine.
MAFP encourages all members to work to achieve the Degree of Fellow. Any Active, Life or Inactive member, with dues and re-elections in good standing, may, upon application to the AAFP, be elected to receive the Degree of Fellow upon fulfilling the requirements. For more information on becoming a Fellow visit https://www.msafp.org/professional-development/fellow/
The next convocation ceremony will be July 22 at the 2025 MAFP Annual Meeting in Destin, Florida.

MAFP Members Attend National Conference
AAFP's 2024 National Conference was held August 1-3 in Kansas City, MO. Attendees spent three days networking with other students and residents, engaging with residency programs and faculty, exploring educational resources and career opportunities, and had the opportunity to see firsthand the latest healthcare resources, products, and service. Of the thousands of students and residents in attendance, MAFP was represented by Stacy Mitchell and Syed Mohammed Amanuddin. Hear below what each of them had to say about their experience:
"I had a wonderful time at National Conference. This was my first time attending, and I’m so glad that I was able to experience it as a student. While I already knew the general area I was hoping to attend residency in, it was fun to meet the programs, and I added a couple to my application list that I wasn’t previously aware of. I attended informative lectures on topics like contract negotiation and fellowships, and participated in workshops on family planning and procedural skills. The most fun part was getting to meet people I’ve connected with over social media through the course of my medical training. Turning “internet friends” into “real life friends” was really special, and I hope to continue building those types of connections throughout residency. Seeing the work that is being done on the national level gave me inspiration for my own career trajectory and future involvement with both the MAFP and AAFP."

| | "I had an incredible experience attending the AAFP National Conference in Kansas City this summer. It was not only a fun and engaging event but also an invaluable learning opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting residency programs from across the country, gaining insights into the application process, and understanding how to be a strong candidate. The sessions were incredibly diverse and insightful, ranging from practical tips on residency applications and interviews to discussions about the broad scope of family medicine. I also enjoyed the clinically relevant lectures that not only enhanced my knowledge but also emphasized the importance of being a compassionate and successful physician. Additionally, the hands-on skills workshops were a highlight, allowing me to refine my practical abilities. I’m deeply grateful for the support from MAFP and the AAFP Family Medicine Leads scholarship, which made this experience possible. Being part of this event has only strengthened my passion for family medicine and my commitment to serving our communities."

Each year, one of twelve Southeastern states hosts the Southeastern Family Medicine Forum. This year, Mississippi was the host state. The 2024 SEFM was held August 15 - 17 in Oxford, MS. Our theme for this year was "Come to the 'Sip" where we showcased Mississippi's Southern hospitality as attendees met to build relationships with colleagues, collaborate on important issues, and learn best practices to take back to their home state.
We kicked off Thursday with a welcome reception, followed by a tour of Oxford and the Ole Miss campus, before dining on The Sqaure at Boure'.
| |
Friday was jam packed with exciting speakers and roundtable discussions. Attendees spent the afternoon touring William Faulkner's house and the Wonderbird Gin Distillery.
We wrapped up Friday evening with a Tailgate Party in The 'Sip. We enjoyed local Southern cuisine from Old Taylors Grocery, a charm necklace bar, and caricature drawings by Ricky Nobile.
We are looking forward to next year's forum in Charleston, South Carolina.
