Meet this month's
Featured Artists

,

We invite you to visit the gallery to see the work of this month's Featured Artists: jewelry artist Dana Jansen and abstract painter Kay Layne.

As Featured Artists they have multiple displays of their artwork in the gallery through the end of May, so it's a great opportunity to see artwork by these artists that is not regularly available at the gallery.

Meet the Featured Artists, as well as other gallery artists at our free, open to the public gallery reception on Saturday, May 9th from 5 - 8 pm.  Also enjoy our Spring Bling gift show just in time for Mother's Day.  Raffle drawings for $25 Gallery gift cards will be held during the Reception.

As part of our Featured Artists program, each month we highlight 1 or 2 of our Gallery artists with a special exhibit of their artwork. Click here to see the schedule of upcoming featured artists.

We hope to see you at the gallery!

Sticks & Stones

May 1 - 31, 2015

In May, Arts in the Village Gallery presents Sticks and Stones, a Featured Artist Exhibit showcasing the wire-wrapped jewelry designs of Dana Jansen, along with the architectural and liner abstract works of painter Kay Layne.

A wide selection semi-precious stones, minerals and fossils are intricately framed a by Dana Jansen's elaborate wire wrapping techniques. Curvilinear and and geometric wrapping designs in sterling silver, brass or copper wire supplement the natural beauty of druzy quartz, ammonite fossils, and a wide array of other richly colored and textured natural elements.

Kay Layne uses contrasting and harmonious colors with geometric shapes in her dramatic acrylic paintings. Strong colors in either earth tones or sharp arresting colors in opposition to each other are imposed over flat or textured surfaces that reflect the hard environment of the Southwest. Kay's planar paintings speak, but leave the interpretation up to the viewer.

Meet the artists and enjoy a glass of wine at our
free, open to the public reception on

Saturday, May 9th, from 5 - 8 p.m.

What are your favorite subjects and/or materials?

My work is abstract with no "subject" per say, but I do have favorite "arrangements" of elements in my pieces. I primarily use geometric divisions of the canvas but often use free form splashes of color.

How do you describe your art?

My work is abstract color field in style. I don't paint realism, because I prefer that the viewer respond without my directing him through realistic images. Depending on the viewer, my work can be soothing, challenging, or upsetting.

What inspires you?

I believe growing up in the Texas Panhandle, where the terrain is so flat you can see the grain elevators and oil derricks fifteen miles away, has influenced my simple planar compositions. In addition, my previous architectural profession has influenced my use of geometric elements in my work.

What is different about approach or presentation?

I use contrasting and harmonious colors with geometric shapes imposed over both flat or textured surfaces. I favor strong colors in either earth tones or sharp arresting colors in opposition to each other. My textured paint surfaces reflect the hard environment of the Southwest and are created with paste medium, and/or trowel marks.
