The Route History Experience: Using History to Spur Community Development

History: Historic U.S. Route 66, also known as the Mother Road, was established in 1926. Originally one of the first highway systems in the country. The legendary highway originated in Chicago, Illinois, stretched across Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and ended in Santa Monica, California


Session Description: During this presentation, Route History Vice President and Co-owner; Dr. Stacy Grundy, will expound upon the Route History Framework that highlights the black experience and untold stories along and near historic Route 66 in Illinois. Accordingly, Dr. Grundy will discuss utilizing this rich history to spur community development and self-pride through place-based interventions.

About Dr. Stacy Grundy


Stacy Grundy, DrPH, a respected public health practitioner, community-based researcher, and social entrepreneur. Dr. Grundy is the Vice President and Co-Owner of Route History, Inc., a Black history museum that highlights the experiences, tragedies, resiliency, and excellence of Black people along the Historic Route 66 and in the city of Springfield Illinois. In 2021, Dr. Grundy was recognized as an Influencer by Landmarks Illinois for her profound impact on the state of Illinois’ historic preservation movement. Dr. Grundy holds a B.S. in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a MPH in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Texas School of Public Health, and a Doctor of Public Health degree from the University of South Florida College of Public Health.
