MARY ALICE MONROE was featured in AAA Go Magazine. Writer’s Digest featured two essays by Mary Alice: Writing the Family Saga and Tips to Invite Your Readers into Your Story World. New York Times bestselling author Kwame Alexander gave Mary Alice's upcoming children's book, THE ISLANDERS, a rave review. "This is storytelling for young readers at its finest--Equal parts summer adventure and environmental suspense, The Islanders is a middle-grade love letter to family, friendship, and the natural world."

MARY KAY ANDREWS is back at home in Atlanta after two weeks of virtual and in-person touring for The Newcomer, which earned a second week on the New York Times bestseller list last week. She's celebrating the fact that her 28th novel also hit bestseller lists for The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Publishers Weekly. Also, the paperback of Hello, Summer is just out and perfect to slip into your beach bag. She and Mr. MKA just capped off the five-month-long renovation of their newest vintage summer vacation rental, Coquina Cottage, and are excited to welcome their first guests for Memorial Day Weekend. You can watch her video walkthrough of the cottage on her Instagram feed.

KRISTY WOODSON HARVEY had a real-life Love Actually moment last week when the manuscript pages she was editing flew off the dock and into the water! Fortunately, her intrepid nine-year-old son gathered them all! Since she was editing CHRISTMAS IN PEACHTREE BLUFF, which talks about Love Actually, she feels like this was a good omen. Despite her writing about Christmas, it is feeling like summer in Beaufort, NC and she cannot wait to host the rest of the Fab Five June 23 and June 24! The June 23 luncheon is SOLD OUT, but a few tickets remain for Friends & Fiction LIVE at the Coral Bay Club on June 23 at 7 pm and Dinner with Friends at the Country Club of the Crystal Coast. For dinner reservations call 252-726-1034. Can’t wait to see you there!

PATTI CALLAHAN is so thrilled to see that Once Upon a Wardrobe was chosen as a BUZZ BOOK of the FALL SEASON!! If you CLICK HERE you can read the opening chapters of her book and the others chosen as Fall and Winter Buzz Books! Meanwhile she will be celebrating the start of summer with her kids, lots of food, the southern summer heat already arriving, and the ability to again hug everyone in her family.
An Original Essay by Kristy Woodson Harvey

Each week, the Friends & Fiction authors take turns
writing an essay for Parade.com, the online home of Parade magazine. This week, Kristy shares a column on what her son's adventurous spirit and love of nature has taught her.

When it comes to outdoor adventures, I am not the parent my 9-year-old, Will, generally thinks of first. I am happy to go out on the boat or fish off the dock, but my son was born deeply loving the water and the natural world that makes up our coastal North Carolina town, and is most at home when he is out in it. I have always believed it’s a genetic trait, something passed on from his father and grandfather, who feel the water, sand and sky in much the way that I feel words, and understand them on an elemental level that eludes me.

But, last week, my husband was still at work when Will said, “Hey, Mom. Want to kayak over the island and walk the trail?”
It was a little windy for my liking, but I said, “Sure,” all the same. Because I am the mom who does homework and carpool and bedtime. And, every now and then, I want a taste of what it feels like to be the fun parent.
“You’ll be my guide, right?” I asked, only half-joking, as we walked across the street and down the dock.
“Mom,” he said back. “I’ll show you everything you need to know.”

And, well, my outdoor-loving boy taught me more than a few things about nature—and reminded me a little about life, too.
