C2B Series: Leaps and Bones selling pet products made with lots of love

“A family-owned business that believes in just that, family.” ~ Amy Kenkel

Leaps and Bones is not your run of the mill dog treats and pet store. Amy Kenkel, the owner who leads operations and strategic development, is a proud dog owner who started this business baking dog treats out of her home. Today, Leaps and Bones has three locations, South Windsor, Southington, and an expanded baking site in Manchester.

“We started out as a treat business. We hand-made everything because we wanted to share our love for our dogs with other people,” said Amy.” In all honesty, it was our neighbors and friends who pushed us to open a store front.”

The business has expanded to sell a variety of other dog products like supplements, dog accessories, toys, and more. Amy and her team focus on quality and love to get feedback from their customers. They factor it into their decision making. If products don’t meet their high standards, they aren’t going to sell them.

The business continues to thrive as it goes into its fifteenth year. “I’m extremely proud of how we support our employees,” said Amy. “As a company, we offer livable wages and 401k plans to all our employees. We also give paid time off for full-time and part-time employees and encourage developing skills by supporting continued educational opportunities in their roles.”

They believe and live being kind and look for opportunities to support and give back to the community. They offer discounts to senior citizens, military, and frontline workers, as well as free pupcakes to any canine officer, active duty, or retired for life.

If you have a dog or know a friend or family member who does, drop by their South Windsor or Southington location. Amy and her staff look forward to meeting you. You can also shop with them online.

National School Bus Safety Week: October 17-21, 2022, reminder

Prevent Illegal School Bus Passing Awareness Campaign

Statistically, school buses are the safest way to transport school children.  Yet many injuries and fatalities occur outside of or near a school bus because a motorist has failed to obey the stop-arm warning or to follow local traffic laws.

  • From 2011 and 2020, there were 1.6 times more fatalities among pedestrians (183) than occupants of school buses (113) in school-bus-related crashes.
  • A total of 218 school-age children (18 and younger) died in school-bus-related crashes during that period, either as occupants of school buses or other vehicles, or on foot or bike.
  • Of the 218 deaths, 85 were children who were walking.

Respect the “Danger Zone”

The school bus loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone.” Specifically, this is any side of the bus where a child may not be seen by the bus driver and, therefore, is in the most danger. Let’s work together to keep our children safe as they wait to ride the bus to and from school.

On behalf of CRCOG and the NHTSA team, thanks for your proactive support in school bus safety.
