It’s hard to choose because there are so many wonderful independent booksellers. Warwick’s, Books & Books, Harvard Book Store, and RJ Julia Booksellers are just a few of the ones I love.

Your next book in ten words or less:

Bookstore of the Week
Warwick's

Have you bought a book from Warwick’s Books lately? They are our featured indie of the month! Located in beautiful La Jolla, CA they are the country's oldest continuously family-owned and operated bookstore, making them an ideal partner for our mission! Please shop local, shop small, and support our partners by buying from Warwick's all month long. Browse their selection which includes the F&F hosts' books as well as the latest by this week’s guest, Alice Hoffman.

Remember you can also always find all the books by every F&F guest, past and present, in the F&F Bookshop.org Shop, with portions of all sales placed there helping to fund F&F and going straight into the pockets of indie booksellers nationwide. Since its inception, Bookshop.org has raised more than $16 million for indie bookstores!

An Original Essay by Patti Callahan

Each week, the Friends & Fiction authors take turns
writing an essay for Parade.com, the online home of Parade magazine. This week, Patti asks if we are too old for fairy tales. Spoiler alert: NO!

Are we ever too old for fairy tales?

Before you answer, think about how it feels when you hear the words, “Once upon a time.” Don’t you lean forward? Don’t you want to know what happens next?

In the opening page of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, legendary 20th-century author C. S. Lewis dedicates the book to his goddaughter, Lucy, by writing, “Someday you will be old enough to read fairy tales again.” What does he mean when he says this? Old enough? Didn’t he mean ‘young enough’?

Or maybe he didn’t. Maybe he meant that fairy tales appear when we need them—both when we’re young enough to view the world in wonder, and old enough to know that behind life’s difficulties sometimes lurks some magic. I will never feign to answer for Lewis, but it does beg the question—are we yet old enough to read fairy tales again?
