Letter from the Board Chair
|
Dear Medical Alumni Board Members,
We are starting the second half of the 2017-2018 year in the most perfect way by celebrating our four Medical Alumni who will be receiving the Founders Award on February 2, 2018 from the Georgetown University Alumni Association. Our first Board Meeting of 2018 will be the following day. The awardees' names are below and photographs will be in the next newsletter. Our expanded Medical Alumni Board has members who represent the alumni population across age, geographic, ethnic and gender backgrounds in exact proportions.
We will look forward to continuing to work with the current students, alumni and faculty in order to support their efforts. This newsletter has been a major asset to spread the news of the work of the Board. Many thanks to Dr. Nancy Ripp Clark for her excellent work.

Med Reunion 2017 is in the books! There were 561 attendees during this past reunion weekend, which took place during a beautiful weekend in October. The big class winners were from Med '72, which walked away with a record-breaking three award Cups. Congratulations to all classes! Reunion photos can be found on the GU Med Facebook page.
One of the most meaningful parts of the weekend was the commemoration of the life of Dr. Michael Adams (M'92), GUSOM Professor of Medicine who was beloved as an outstanding clinician, educator and friend. The Class of 1992 raised enough funding to fully endow a scholarship in his name, which was presented at the Friday night dinner event during the 25th Reunion of his class. In addition, a cherry tree and memorial bench were dedicated on the hill in front of the Medical School, honoring his lifelong devotion and commitment to both school and hospital. More information about Mike's achievements and contributions to Georgetown can be found here.

Dr. Ellen M. Dugan (M'82), the GUSOM Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, has been working very diligently with her committee to choose the best candidates for the Georgetown Medical Class of 2022.
"The Office of Admissions is in the throes of the 2017-2018 Cycle. Thus far, we have had over 13,000 applications and will interview approximately 1100 applicants. Along with Science GPA and the MCAT scores, we focus on a holistic review of an application which includes experiences with clinical exposure, research, service to the underserved, leadership and being active within the community. As we educate our Students within the mission and philosophy of the Jesuit tradition, "Cura Personalis, " we also focus our holistic review with these principles as the foundation."

This year's Lauerman Cup was played on October 30, 2017 at Bethesda Country Club in Bethesda MD. The ongoing rivalry between the Orthopedics and Anesthesia Departments was supplanted by a fearsome foursome of GUSOM students, who captured the Cup after a very close
hard fought victory. The students became the teachers!
Through the generosity of sponsors, golfers, and donors, over $25,000 was raised to benefit the Medical Student Life Scholarship Fund.
All golfers are invited to join in the fun and sign up for the 2018 Lauerman Cup - look for announcements early next fall.

The Legacy of Kober-Cogan
Named after former Dean of the Georgetown University Medical Center, George Kober, and former Dean of the Georgetown University Dental School, William Cogan, Kober-Cogan Building is slated for demolition as the new hospital expands. Used as a residence hall for residents and fellows as well as a clinical and research building, it will remain as an important place in Georgetown's medical history.

In addition to his role as Director of the Lombardi Cancer Center,
Dr. Louis Weiner will now also become the Director of the Georgetown Cancer Institute overseeing the development and coordination of cancer clinical care and research programs across the entire Medstar Health system.
Dr. Richard Gillis Receives GUMC Lifetime Achievement Award

He received many awards during his tenure, including multiple Golden Apples, the Kaiser Permanente Teaching Award, EGTA award for graduate teaching, and induction into the MAGIS Society of Master Teachers.
