Upcoming Board Meeting
Dear Medical Alumni Board Members,

We're looking forward to seeing all the members of the Medical Alumni Board for our Winter Leadership Meeting coming up this Friday February 3rd from 10:15 am to noon at a place where most of us have never been - the Georgetown University Law Center (Room Hotung 1000), on Capitol Hill. Map and directions can be accessed here.

Later that evening, we'll join together with alumni from many of the other GU schools to celebrate the recipients of the GUAA Alumni Service Recognition Awards. 
For the first time in many years, the banquet will be held off campus, at the Willard Hotel, beginning at 6 pm.

The School of Medicine will be bestowing the Founders Award on the following GUSOM alumni to recognize their outstanding service and dedication: 
Jennifer Aventuro Luck, M.D. (MS'89, M'93, R'97)
Andrea Giacometti, M.D. (M'87)
Daphne Keshishian, M.D. (M'93)
Charles Melone Jr., M.D. (C'64, M'69, Parent '91, '02)

The Gaston Award for outstanding service and leadership by an undergraduate alumni is being presented to Robert 
Barone M.D. (C'84, M'88).

Meet the Awards Committee Members

Anthony Caggiano, M.D. - CHAIR

Tony (M'64) served in the U.S. Air Force for two years after his Ob/Gyn residency and practiced in New Jersey for the next thirty-three years. While on staff at Mountainside Hospital, he served there as Director of Ob/Gyn, President of the medical staff, and Chair of the Physician Hospital Organization. He was also President of the Medical Society of New Jersey and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Now retired from private practice, he continues to teach at the UMDNJ-NJ Medical School as an Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn and volunteers with Catholic Charities. In addition to spending time with his six children and nine grandchildren, he is an avid golfer and hopes to add to his two holes-in-one.

 
Bob Barone, M.D.

Bob (C'84, M'88) lives in Mendham N.J. and is a vitreoretinal surgeon directing the Retina Service at Eye Physicians of Sussex County. Bob has been a member of the Georgetown Medical Board and the Alumni Board of Governors since 2008. He was honored by the Alumni Association with the Founders A ward in 2005 and will receive the William Gaston Award this year. Bob is married to Carla (Straniero) Barone C'84 and has two sons, Michael, a sophomore at Duke University and Alec, a senior HS student at The Delbarton School. In his free time, Bob enjoys traveling and playing golf.
 
Matthew Cooper, M.D.  

Matthew (M'94) is a Professor of Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine and the Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at the Medstar Georgetown Transplant Institute (MGTI), UNOS surgical director for the Pediatric Kidney Transplant program at Children's National Medical Center and the Medical Director for Quality and Safety for Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. 

 Tim Duffin, M.D.

Tim (M'88) is a Urologist in solo practice in Clarksville,TN. He graduated from Catholic University before attending Georgetown School of Medicine, then joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 2000.
Tim has been involved with the Med Board for the past 6 years and was president for three years.  He is married to Carol and has three children: Jack is a senior pre-med student at the University of Denver; Kyle is a freshman studying business at the University of Alabama; and Ryan is a junior In high school.


Christina Hanna, M.D.

Christina (SFS 08, M'14) is a double Hoya and the first graduate from the School of Foreign Service to be accepted into the EAP program at Georgetown School of Medicine.  She is currently a Resident Physician in the University of Pennsylvania Medicine-Pediatrics program and plans to pursue an oncology fellowship.  Christina enjoys travel and is dedicated to global health.  In her free time, she loves to attend Hoya basketball games--it is never a dull experience with Dr Palumbo and Dr Licamele! 

Bernie Jay, M.D. 

Bernie (M'71) stayed on at Georgetown and trained in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology from 1971 thru 1974, then joined the U.S. Army from 1974 to 1976.  Following his Army term, he did a second residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Yale from 1976 to 1979, then opened his own radiology practice in 1979 and continues in active practice.  He served on the Med Alumni Board for over 20 years,  was a member of the Board of Governors and is currently an active Senator.   He has received both the John Carroll and Founders Award.
His two sons (Bryan M'01 and Michael M'99) stayed on at GUH  to complete radiology residencies, and his daughter Meghan (C'06) currently lives in Brooklyn, working for DEBRA (an organization caring for children with epidermolysis bullosa - "butterfly children").  He has 5 wonderful grandchildren - more future Hoyas!

Steve Luck, M.D.

Steve (G'86, M'90) lives in Potomac, MD.  He is Chief Medical Officer and Vice President for Development for Anesthesia Concepts, LLC, a company he co-founded that specializes in providing anesthesia care for ambulatory surgery centers.  Steve also serves as Medical Director for the MedStar Surgery Center at Lafayette and Regional Chief Medical Officer for NorthStar Anesthesia.  This is his first term on the Medical Alumni Board.  Steve and his wife Jenifer Aventuro Luck (G'89, M'93, R'97, F'98) are physician mentors to students through various GUMS programs.  Steve served as Chair and Co-Chair for his 20th and 25th reunions, was President of the Georgetown Clinical Society from 2011-12 and one of the recipients of the 2012 Founders Award.  Jenifer and Steve are the proud parents of Hoya fans Avery, Jackson and Conor.
  

Anne O'Donnell, M.D.

Anne ( M'82) is a life-long Hoya, continuing at Georgetown after medical school to complete her Medicine residency and Pulmonary Medicine fellowship. She is the Division Chief of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. She is also the Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Georgetown University. Her special interests include bronchiectasis, respiratory infections, including nontuberculous mycobacterium, sleep apnea and sleep disorders, cystic fibrosis, and non-invasive ventilation.

A Med-Law Winner!
Georgetown Med physicians and students are partnering with faculty and students from the Georgetown Law Center to help patients overcome health and legal hurdles in reducing health disparities. The goal of the new   Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance is to provide a more holistic approach to help the most disadvantaged DC area residents.


RX for Sunlight
A recent study from the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology presented findings showing that sunlight can boost immunity by directly activating key immune cells.

If you're looking for a good read, consider "Strange Glow" written by Timothy Jorgensen, PhD, MPH, associate professor of radiation medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. Several reviews ranked it in their top ten books of the year.


Parkinson's Researcher Honored
Dr. Ira Shoulson, professor of Neurology, Pharmacology and Human Science and Director of the Program for Regulatory Science and Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, has recently been honored for his research, leadership, and advances in treatment for Parkinson's Disease.
