MADISON, NJ — Acclaimed film, television, and Broadway actor Ray Fisher returns to The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (STNJ) this fall in a new production of Macbeth directed by Artistic Director Brian B. Crowe. This will mark the first time Shakespeare’s dark tale of ambition and madness has appeared on STNJ’s Main Stage in two decades. The strictly limited run will play at The F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre on the campus of Drew University beginning October 16, 2024.
Widely recognized by movie-goers for his role as Victor Stone/Cyborg in Zack Snyder's Justice League, Ray Fisher is no stranger to the stage. A seasoned theater actor, he made his mark earning rave reviews for his portrayal of Muhammad Ali in the Off-Broadway production, Fetch Clay, Make Man from Tony-Award winning director Des McAnuff, and reprised his star-making role in Debbie Allen’s revival of the play in 2023. Last season, Ray received a Drama Desk nomination for the role of Lymon in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson directed by LaTanya Richardson Jackson.
Early in his career, Ray Fisher appeared as Macbeth with The Shakespeare Theatre’s acclaimed Shakespeare LIVE! touring company, taught in the Theatre’s in-school residency program, and gave a heartbreaking performance as Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird. “He is a powerful presence on stage,” says Crowe, “an actor with incredible emotional depth, poetry, and strength about him. I can’t wait for audiences to see what he brings to this iconic role, and we are thrilled to welcome him back to our stage.”
A New Jersey native, Ray expressed his excitement about returning to his roots for this production. “Playing Macbeth on The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s main stage will be one of those rare full circle moments. For me, coming back to perform Shakespeare at STNJ is much more than a return to form—it’s a return home.”
Ray was last seen in Zack Snyder’s space epic Rebel Moon. He can also be seen in the third installment of HBO’s Emmy Award winning series True Detective opposite Mahershala Ali, and the limited series Women of the Movement. Fisher will next be seen starring in the film adaptation of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson alongside John David Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Danielle Deadwyler. The film is scheduled for release in November 2024 by Netflix.
