Opinions in the age of COVID-19: Illness concerns, financial worries, and beliefs about racism in California 

The ongoing public health crisis and spiking coronavirus rates in California have led to feelings of uncertainty for the majority of people living in the state, according to a recent survey report by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). The survey found that many Californians are concerned about becoming ill and managing their personal finances,   concerns which vary based upon race and ethnicity. The report also identified concerns about racism among a majority of Californians and support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. 

Regarding  concerns over illness and contracting COVID-19, 41% of Californians said they were very worried and 36% said they were somewhat worried about getting coronavirus. These results varied by ethnicity, with 61% of Latinos saying they were very worried, while only 37% of Asian Americans and 28% of whites and African Americans said they were very worried.

With regard to race, 60% of Californians said that racism is a significant problem in the United States , while another 25% indicate it is somewhat of a problem. Across the board, two-thirds of Californians support BLM, with 31% saying they strongly support the movement and 37% saying they somewhat support it.
