How can I best share the results of urine toxicology with my patients?
|

Here are a few of the tips that Dr. Alane O’Connor shared during her most recent webinar.
Talking with patients about toxicology testing
- Substance use disorders are chronic diseases and returns to use are expected events.
- There are many reasons why a patient might not be forthcoming about returns to use.
- Patients do not always know specifically what drugs they might have been exposed to.
- Discuss results openly and honestly. Treat patients with dignity and respect. Be straightforward and non-judgmental.
- Terminology matters. Use non-stigmatizing language such as ‘‘positive’’ or ‘‘negative’’ as opposed to ‘‘clean’’ or ‘‘dirty.’’
- It is okay to say that the results and the explanation do not really align but don’t be confrontational.
- Results can be used to adjust the treatment plan but not “punish” the patient. Presence of illicit drugs correlates to risk of overdose death.

Becky Peasley has been a nurse in the state of Maine for 25 years, but her passion for helping others extends far beyond work. She is a board member for the Coastal Recovery Community Center and speaks in jails, at committee meetings, and at other local opportunities to educate and inspire others.

The monthly space for peer supporters (recovery coaches, CIPSS) in Maine will offer mutual support to explore the challenges and opportunities of working within healthcare settings and to offer training. It will build a space for peer supporters to connect with each other, create a community of support, develop skills, and identify strategies to support themselves (self-care). It is offered to those working in such settings as primary care, emergency departments, substance use treatment clinics, behavioral health clinics, etc.

This 7-week, case-based curriculum aims to train clinicians in primary care pain management strategies, including non-opioid and non-pharmacologic treatment options, substance use screening, risk reduction counseling, and tapering strategies for opioids and benzodiazepines.
This program is led by University of New Mexico faculty and consultants specializing in pain and addiction medicine.
