Cybersecurity should not be an afterthought. The month of October is designated Cybersecurity Awareness Month, below are some tips to keep you safe as you connect online daily.

Cybersecurity First

Whether you’re purchasing new devices, creating new accounts, or managing sensitive data, cybersecurity should always be considered first. With the continuous evolution of cyberthreats, it’s also important to ensure that your children are practicing safe browsing habits. Put cybersecurity first with these helpful tips:

  • Understand what’s sensitive. Familiarize yourself with what is considered nonpublic personal information (NPI) and why it could be dangerous for it to fall into the wrong hands.

  • Encrypt your data and back it up. Encryption prevents unauthorized access to the information you store. Using a proper backup process eliminates the threat of losing your data from ransomware infections.

  • Get savvy about Wi-Fi. Public wireless and hotspots are not secure, leaving information you share visible to hackers on the same Wi-Fi network.

  • Own your online presence. When signing up for new accounts, downloading new apps, or buying new devices, configure your privacy and security settings right away.

  • Share with care. When posting on social media and public forums, keep in mind that what you post is online forever.

  • Keep your kids safe online. Children may be tech savvy, but they aren’t necessarily cyber savvy. Ensure that your children/grandchildren stay safe online by managing the parental settings on their devices and accounts.

Learn more about what you could be sharing with scammers. Unsafe social media habits give cyber criminals exactly what they want.
