Mayor Sullivan's Champions Update

May, 2024

Message From Mayor Sullivan

Dear fellow Brocktonians,

I hope this newsletter finds you well.

There is a lot going on in Brockton right now. All of our construction projects are proceeding on schedule. Occupants of City Hall's third floor have relocated to Brockton Commons which is right behind City Hall. These departments include the Building Department, the DPW, Inspectional Services, and Planning and Development. In June, we will be unveiling the bronze statue of Marvelous Marvin Hagler on the corner of Hagler Way and Petronelli Way. The City Hall Farmers Market begins on June 7th and will take place along VFW Parkway behind City Hall. The Mayor's Summer Concert Series begins July 10th.

I hope you enjoy this issue of Champions Update. Please feel free to contact my office if we can be of any assistance: Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–4:30 pm, 508-580-7123.

Very truly yours,

Robert Sullivan, Esq.

Mayor

"The Brady Bunch" Star Christopher Knight Visits City Hall

On May 10th, Mayor Sullivan and the employees at City Hall proudly welcomed Mr. Christopher Knight to City Hall. Mr. Knight, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and actor who played Peter Brady in the classic TV series, The Brady Bunch, was in Brockton on behalf of his charitable organizations. Mayor Sullivan presented Mr. Knight with a Mayoral Citation recognizing him for his charitable work. Christopher graciously posed for pictures with everyone who wanted one. We thank Mr. Knight, his wife Cara and her parents, and their adorable dog Stella, for taking the time to meet with us and for including the “City of Champions” within their Massachusetts visit.

Go Take a Hike!

D.W. Field Park is not the only place to get close to nature. Now that it is finally getting warmer, check out these hiking trails right in the City of Brockton.

Brockton Audubon Preserve: Here you will find approximately two miles of well-established trails throughout a variety of habitats. The parking lot is a small area near 1170 Pleasant Street, in close proximity to Albany Street.

Stone Farm Conservation Area: This area offers about two and a half miles of trail offering a wide range of diverse flora. It is located on the north side of Torrey Street, heading toward Easton, on the right side behind the baseball field. It is near 630 Torrey Street.

Brockton's Safety Action Plan

City of Brockton has just published its Safety Action Plan. Prepared with assistance from MassDOT (Massachusetts Department of Transportation), the plan identifies Brockton's intersections most in need of improvements, and provides several design and policy suggestions. With this plan, the City will be able to apply for federal funding from President Biden's Infrastructure Law.

The Mayor's Seat Belt Campaign

Mayor Sullivan is teaming up with MassDOT (Massachusetts Department of Transportation) and Travelers Insurance to promote seat belt usage in Brockton. Did you know that only 42% of Brockton residents wear seat belts on a regular basis? That is much lower than the national average of 92%. The campaign, which was developed with community input, will focus on education, public media placement, presence at community events, and a 72-foot mural at 364 North Main Street.

Mayor Sullivan says that seat belt usage "is critical. It can save your life.”

The campaign will kick off during the month of May.

Social Services Update

Brockton's Unhoused Population and Encampments

Brockton's Department of Social Services and the Department of Inspectional Services conduct weekly wellness checks on individuals experiencing homelessness to ensure their health and safety, and to offer available services and resources.

The City is awaiting guidance from the State of Massachusetts on how to legally address encampments and/or sleeping on public property.

The Homeless Task Force meets every other Wednesday at 10:00 am via Zoom. Those interested in attending the meetings or viewing the meeting minutes may contact the Mayor’s Office (508-580-7123).

Coordinated Clean-up Efforts

On April 29th, the Department of Public Works, the Parks Department, and the Director of Social Services eliminated a number of health and safety concerns by removing excessive trash and debris from an encampment in D.W. Field Park. On May 1st, the same team performed the same service at Snow Park. Coordinated efforts are being made to clean additional areas within that park.

Opioid Recovery and Remediation Fund Community Input Meeting

On Wednesday evening, May 1st, Director of Social Services Jazmine Bradsher hosted a public meeting to gather input from public health experts, municipal leaders, and families affected by the opioid crisis. The purpose of the meeting was to gather the community's ideas for how to spend Brockton’s portion of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s opioid abatement funds. Among the many ideas generated at the meeting were small grants for local addiction treatment and prevention programs, large syringe disposal units throughout the city, a women's treatment facility, and community-based events.

Public Safety Building Construction Update

The Public Safety Building project is progressing and passersby can finally see work happening above the construction fence. The orange scaffolding, seen here on the top left, is staging around the elevator and staircase where block walls will be installed by Lighthouse Masonry, Inc. Footings, grade beams, and foundation walls are being constructed by Marguerite Concrete, Inc. The giant pile of dirt visible from Warren Ave (lower left image) is being used by J. Derenzo Company for backfilling the site.

Are you wondering what the Public Safety Building will look like when it is complete? Here are some renderings. Do those columns in the lower left image look familiar? Those were salvaged from the old Brockton High School building. You will also see the old steps, and other architectural elements incorporated into the new building.

The Public Safety Building is scheduled for opening in the summer of 2025.

Take home a piece of Brockton history!

The City salvaged bricks from the old Brockton High School building to distribute to former students or anyone who admired the building. The bricks are located at the Recycle Depot, 300 Oak Hill Way. Stop by between the hours of 8:30 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Friday to pick one up, or call 508-580-7827 for more information.

Recycle Like a Champion

This month's tip: simplify

Is recycling just too complicated? Keep it simple! Just do paper, plastic water bottles, or soup cans. A little recycling is better than none.

The keys to recycling like a champion:

NO food, NO liquids, NO straws, NO plastic cups, and NO plastic dishware in the recycling bin. Compost all food when possible.

Download the Recycle Coach app for personalized recycling support.

Pick up your Recycle Like a Champion swag in the Mayor's Office (45 School Street) or the Recycle Depot (300 Oak Hill Way). Stickers, magnets, crayons, and tote bags are all thanks to a grant from MassDEP (Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection).

Look for the recycling instructions on top of your recycle bin.
