Mayor's Message:

House Music Festival For a Cause

Mayor MappIG.jpg

Dear Jazz,

The Plainfield House Music Festival is New Jersey’s largest life-saving party. Beginning with the first one in 2019, we used the power and influence of music to raise awareness for Prostate Cancer and the other diseases that disproportionately affect black and brown communities. The House Music Festival for a Cause, now in its fourth year, has evolved to become a highlight New Jersey event.

As we gather for Saturday’s festival, we look forward to the lineup of incredible house music DJs who will keep the park rocking for NINE (9) hours. Music, in all its forms, has a remarkable power to bring us together, and the House Music Festival is a celebration of rhythm and melody. It’s an incredible opportunity to unite our community while reminding everyone to prioritize their health. It’s more than a festival; we want everyone in our community to feel welcome. As Mayor, I continually seek ways to unite our city. Last year, over 8,000 “house heads” filled Cedarbrook Park; this year, we anticipate over 10,000. A city that dances together can grow and succeed together.

The fact that this festival is not only about music but also about promoting health awareness is what sets the Plainfield House Music Festival apart from many other events. It came to life to draw attention to the importance of prostate cancer screening, but it has grown in scope and intent. We have widened its mission to include information about other chronic illnesses prevalent in the black and brown community, such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and strokes. Additionally, we don’t just provide information about chronic illnesses; we also offer a variety of health screenings, including one for prostate cancer.

Seeing thousands of community members from different walks of life coming together brings me great joy. Residents and visitors, young and old, everyone is guaranteed to have a great time creating memories, dancing, and enjoying delicious food. Join us at the Plainfield House Music Festival for a Cause and prepare to be caught up in an unforgettable experience.

Mensaje Del Alcalde:

Festival de Música House Por una Causa

Querido(a) Jazz,

A MESSAGE FROM UNION COUNTY TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY BOARD:

The NJ Safe Passing Law is now in effect!

NJ SAFE PASSING LAW

The NJ Safe Passing Law (NJSPL) (A5570/S2208) is now in effect. The new law provides clear rules of the road for all motorists about when and how to pass people sharing the road on foot, on bicycles, on scooters, wheelchairs or in other legally permitted ways to travel other than a motor vehicle.

A short video demonstrates how drivers can comply with the law when passing a bicycle rider or vulnerable road user:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz8wrYFJptY

Here are the basic elements of the New Jersey Safe Passing Law:

  • Drivers must move over a lane (if there’s one to move into) while following all current no-passing and no-speeding laws.
  • On a single-lane road, drivers have to provide a distance of at least 4 feet to safely pass a vulnerable road user.
  • If 4 feet is not possible, drivers must slow to 25 mph and be prepared to stop until they can pass safely without endangering those sharing the road.
  • Violating the law results in a $100 fine (causing bodily injury results in a $500 fine and 2 motor vehicle points).

New Jersey Law on Loud Car Radios:

There is a new state law aimed at loud music from vehicles, often called "boom cars" because of their large speakers. A “nuisance motor vehicle” creates sounds that are “plainly audible at a distance of 50 feet or more.”

A first violation comes with a fine from $250 to $500, a second violation from $500 to $750, and a third violation from $750 to $1,000 and two penalty points on the driver's license.

Change in Terms – “Crash” replaces “Accident”

NJDOT has officially changed its policy to use the word “crash” instead of “accident” when referring to traffic collisions. This recognizes that collisions just don’t happen, but have causes.

A MESSAGE FROM

THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY:

"Governor Murphy Signs Legislation to Protect Veterans and Their Families When Seeking Assistance with Veterans’ Benefits"

TRENTON - To help protect veterans from exploitation, Governor Phil Murphy today signed legislation (S-3292/A-3286) to establish standard requirements that must be followed if an individual is seeking compensation for providing assistance or advice to veterans and their families regarding veterans’ benefits. The requirements apply to situations in which an individual assists with the preparation or representation of any claim for benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMAVA).

The legislation establishes the circumstances under which compensation may be sought in these situations; requires terms of service and compensation to be in writing; prohibits individuals from guaranteeing any specific result when offering their services; and requires individuals to disclose any affiliations they may have with the VA, DMAVA, or other federally chartered service organizations prior to entering into an agreement with the veteran or their family. Under the bill, any violation of these terms will be considered an unlawful act under the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, which may result in monetary or other penalties.

“Our veterans put their lives on the line in service to our country and have more than earned the benefits for which they and their loved ones are eligible,” said Governor Murphy. “We must protect veterans and their families from unscrupulous individuals who would take advantage of them by overcharging for assistance with those benefits. This legislation will help ensure these bad actors either follow all applicable federal standards or face the consequences.”
