Mayor's Message:

Getting Ready for Spring

Mayor MappIG.jpg

Dear Jazz,

Don’t let the snow that came down earlier this week deceive you. We have almost made it through another Winter and Spring is right around the corner. Soon we’ll be met with the sweet sounds of birds chirping in the morning, serene walks in the park, warm sunny days, rejuvenating rain for growth, beautiful flowers, and many more of the gifts that Spring brings. After a cold and dark Winter, we gratefully welcome Spring and traditionally greet her with a freshly cleaned home. Aside of our regular cleaning rituals, we do a deep dive in spring to get rid of the winter cobwebs. Our curtains are washed, the windows are cleaned, and every blanket is on its way to the laundromat. It’s as though we are trying to make every corner of our home inside feel as fresh as it does outside. But there is something else that we should take care of refreshing – ourselves.

Now is the perfect opportunity to not only clean out our homes but leave our bad habits outside with the trash. Whatever promises we made to ourselves and broke following the new year - now is the time to revisit them. Whether it’s kicking a smoking addiction, eating greener, or actually using the gym membership we bought in January – let’s enter Spring with a dedicated commitment to become the best versions of ourselves, not just physically but mentally as well. Let’s set aside time for self-care, plan that vacation you’ve been meaning to take, or find a hobby that brings you peace. Let’s take care of us.

It’s also important to remember that sometimes, what is pulling us behind are not only our bad habits, but the people we keep in our lives that are bad for us. Perhaps it’s someone that does not encourage you to be the best you can be, someone that speaks down to you, or someone that doubts you. Regardless of the situation, our community is full of good people and it’s more harmful than you may realize to be surrounded by those that don’t make life more enjoyable for you.

Now is also the time to plant seeds of kindness. To be the kind of person you’d want in your corner. To serve as an advocate for those that need help raising their voice. To step up to the plate when needed and not just talk the talk but walk the walk. One act of kindness can inspire multiple people to act on their own, and this has the power to change an entire community for the better.

Our days now feel longer as we have more sunlight filled hours to do what we want. I ask that you use this time to visit one of our beautiful parks, go to one of our many delicious restaurants, attend one of our community events, volunteer for one of our community organizations - there is so much to do! And now, it feels like we have the time to do it. Let’s water our community with the love it requires from all of us to bloom into a better city for all. This Spring lets truly refresh and #LovePlainfield more than we have before.

Mensaje Del Alcalde:

Preparándose Para La Primavera

Queridx Jazz,

THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY:

Governor Murphy Signs Legislation to Help Veterans More Easily Obtain Nursing Licensure While Addressing Critical Health Care Shortages

Additional Bill Signed Into Law Honors Veterans’ Sacrifices by Covering Burial Costs for More Veterans

TRENTON – As part of the Murphy Administration’s ongoing efforts to support veterans and their families throughout New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy today signed two bills into law to ease the path for veterans with certain medical training to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and to expand eligibility for veterans with limited incomes to have their funerals covered by the government.

“It is our duty as a State and as a society to support the veterans who have selflessly served in defense of our country,” said Governor Murphy. “These new laws will allow us to honor their sacrifices and ease the burden on their families by expanding eligibility for funeral costs that are covered by county governments. Additionally, we are making it easier for other veterans to obtain civilian employment as licensed practical nurses by recognizing the medical training they received during their time in the military, which will also help bolster our statewide health care system.”

“The first bill relieves a burden on low-income families who seek to preserve the memory of their loved one’s life and service to our country,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Lisa J. Hou, D.O., The Adjutant General of New Jersey and Commissioner of Veterans Affairs. “The second piece of legislation is great news for the medical professionals within our services who are looking to apply their valuable skills outside the military.”

Veterans who are unable to pay for their funerals may have the cost of their burial or cremation covered by the county government. To allow more veterans to qualify for this service, the first bill (A-2493) expands discharge classification eligibility criteria from veterans who were honorably discharged to any veteran who is discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

The bill also clarifies income eligibility for these veterans as not exceeding 200 percent of the federal poverty level. To further expand where eligible veterans may be buried, the bill adds national cemeteries as a permissible burial sites.

President Biden's Budget Makes Our Communities Safer and Combats Crime

Biden-Harris Administration announced over $73 million in outreach grants to connect more Americans with affordable, high-speed internet

Over 16.75 million households are now saving over $500 million per month, thanks to the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)

Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced new funding to lower the cost of high-speed internet, releasing $73 million in Affordable Connectivity Outreach Grants to help more Americans sign up for the Affordable Connectivity Program and save on monthly internet costs.

In the 21st century, affordable, reliable high-speed internet is key to opportunity – to access education, healthcare, work, precision agriculture and keep in touch with loved ones. Still, too many are left without high-speed internet because they lack the infrastructure, or are inhibited by high costs or lack of technological skills. In particular, these inequities impact communities of color, rural communities and older Americans where the lack of affordable, reliable high-speed internet contributes to significant economic, health and other disparities.

That’s why President Biden and Vice President Harris worked with Democrats, Republicans, and Independents to make sweeping changes to lower the cost of internet for families across the country as part of the Biden Administration’s Investing in America Agenda, including a record $65 billion in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to make sure all Americans finally have access to affordable, high-speed internet.

Already, 16.75 million households are saving over $500 million per month on high-speed internet through the Affordable Connectivity Program. Now, the Biden-Harris Administration is releasing an additional $73 million in Affordable Connectivity Outreach Grants to help more Americans sign up for the program and save on internet costs.
