Your mental health plays an important role in your overall wellness! And since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, that makes this the perfect time for you to take Just One Step and learn the facts about mental health.

Your One Step This Month:

Learn the Facts About Mental Health

When you or someone you love is struggling with depression, substance abuse or other issues that affect their mental health, it can feel very isolating. You may feel reluctant to talk about these challenges or concerned that people will judge you or your loved ones unfairly.

These unfair judgments create a stigma around talking about mental health. That’s why it’s important for all of us to learn the facts about mental health and work to fight against misinformation.

Struggling with mental health does not make someone weak, dangerous or untrustworthy. It’s not even especially uncommon: At least 1 in 5 adults in the United States live with a mental illness. By learning the facts about mental health, you can help remove the stigma and make it easier for everyone including yourself to get support when you need it.

Bust These 3 Mental Health Myths

Myth #1: Mental health issues can’t affect me.

Fact #1: Mental health issues can affect anyone!

Anyone can experience a mental health crisis at one time or another. According to the Centers for Disease Control, as of 2020 about:

·      1 in 5 American adults experienced a mental health condition in a given year

·      1 in 6 young people have experienced a major depressive episode

·      1 in 20 Americans have lived with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depression

If you’re worried about your mental health, please know that you’re not alone. Visit Perspectives, our Employee Assistance Program through AllOne Health, to find mental health counseling and other resources for help.

Myth #2: Mental health issues are the result of personality weaknesses or character flaws. People can “snap out of it” if they try hard enough.

Fact #2: Mental health conditions have nothing to do with your character. Many underlying factors can affect your mental health, including:

·      Biological factors, like genes, physical illness, injury or brain chemistry

·      Life experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse

·      Family history of mental health conditions

Fortunately, people with mental health conditions can get treatment and find support for recovery.

Myth #3: It is impossible to prevent a mental health condition.

Fact #3: By addressing known risk factors that can increase the chances of someone developing a mental health condition, it’s possible to intervene and prevent mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Taking these steps can lead to:

·      Better quality of life

·      Increased lifespan

·      Improved family life
