Note from the Director

Just this morning my wife Roxana gave me a 2018 article from National Geographic titled “Why Birds Matter,” by Jonathan Franzen. It resonated so loudly that I had to share it.

It seems that some people are just birdbrains like me, and others just haven’t seen the light! Or the flight, or the perfect feathers, or the real impact of these awesome creatures. It’s fun to identify birds by sound, keep a list, and know what to expect in various habitats.

The spring migration has started and it's time to be aware. Please let us know if you’d be interested in signing up for an early morning bird walk. If we get a few folks interested, we’ll give it a try! In the meanwhile, and for a touch of inspiration, please read the article here.

The JSU Canyon Center is dedicated to the appreciation of all things in nature, and we work hard to share our knowledge and the knowledge of others. Please check out our upcoming programs, and especially those planned for Spring Break. You will find events featuring Black Bear information, pet dog activities, hikes, a campout for women and so much more.

Thanks for taking a look and being supporters of the JSU Canyon Center. Now, let's all get ready for the 2024 spring season of birds!

All the best,

Pete Conroy, Director

🔥 🔥 Nature's Reset Button 🔥 🔥

Prescribed burning is happening throughout the month in the Little River National Preserve, the JSU Canyon Center property, and across the state as both public land managers and private landowners set fire to the lands.

A prescribed burn is a planned and carefully managed fire, deliberately set under controlled conditions by fire experts under specific weather conditions. Prescribed fire can be used as a reset button to help restore ecosystems, enhance habitats for plants and wildlife, and reduce the risk of dangerous wildfires.

💨 If you see smoke near the Preserve, check our Canyon Center Facebook page or the National Park Service website to learn if a prescribed fire is happening and for information about road and trail closures. 💨
