Tip of the Month
States Spring Forward!

It's springtime - a time for new growth and development. Two states, CA and CO, recently took the initiative to cultivate their capacity to provide evidence-based hearing screening to young children!

On April 10th, the CA Head Start Association kicked off their Annual Health Institute for the third year in a row with an option for participants to engage in a half-day workshop on developing Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) hearing screening and follow-up practices for children 0-5 years of age. The workshop included 25 representatives from Early Head Start and Head Start programs across the state who were ready to learn and then return home to screen the children they serve. By the end of the training, participants knew how to use their equipment effectively and how to access helpful ECHO Initiative OAE Implementation tools. Combining an existing meeting (like a State Health Institute) with an opportunity for focused training has proven to be one efficient way to meet the learning needs of professionals from diverse areas across a state.

The following week, ECHO Initiative staff were invited by the Colorado Department of Education to provide a half-day workshop for more than 70 educational audiologists.This workshop focused on examining the roles that educational audiologists can play in expanding the availability of evidence-based hearing screening and follow-up services in local communities. Participants were introduced to:
  • A variety of OAE equipment models that can be used with young children;
  • Equipment features that are key to lay screener success in early childhood settings; and
  • Resources available from the ECHO Initiative to help audiologists support the development of community-based screening efforts.
Fifty-five of the audiologists attended in person, while additional participants joined from remote areas in CO using distance video technology. This is another model that states can utilize to expand training capacity.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, and the ECHO Initiative would like nothing "better" than the chance to explore with you how to expand your state, regional or local hearing screening efforts!
