A Word From the Kids

"I wanna say thank you to everyone {at the Choir School}. You all help us a lot. You help us with the drama at school, you help us play guitar, you help us do basically everything - mentally, physically, and musically." -Imani

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we asked students if Choir School volunteers and staff have helped them grow. The verdict? We have some amazing teachers on our team! Join us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to read more.

Don't miss the final concert of our Jubilee Season!

This celebration of life features Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and Diedre Robinson’s exquisite setting of “Steal Away.” The evening’s repertoire shares the theme of remembrance, honoring the lives of Americans that were tragically lost as a result of the global pandemic.

New at the Choir School: Guitar Class

Front: Shelby, Niamyiah, and Caleb (students)

Back: Zoë (student) and Ms. Katie

For the first time in our 140-year history, we're offering guitar class to enrolled after-school students in a new program called Heartstrings! Classes began in February of this year.

Teacher Katie Zimmer says, "It has been an honor and an absolute blast teaching Heartstrings’ inaugural season! The students have made such amazing progress, starting from square one to now being able to play and switch between many chords, along with a variety of strumming patterns.

"Each week the students come so excited and ready to learn, and we always have a fun time advancing our guitar skills each week. We are currently getting ready to play Alicia Keys’ 'Fallin' at a studio recital and to accompany some of the other wonderful singers at the Choir School! I’m looking forward to celebrating all of their success at the end of our first session!"

Heartstrings is made possible by a generous grant from the Arsht-Cannon Fund. This grant support the Choir School's new effort to engage Wilmington's Latino community by improving the cultural relevance of our curricular offerings and our support of Latino families.

Private Lessons at the Choir School

Did you know? We offer private voice and piano lessons as part of our regular after-school programming! They are available to Choir School students who demonstrate strong commitment to the program and are succeeding in school upon request. Lessons are available at no additional cost to families, removing a key barrier to access!

Harlan Elementary Satellite Program

We just concluded a successful launch of a satellite program at Harlan Elementary School in partnership with the Brandywine School District! We are grateful to Ms. Tracey Roberts, principal at Harlan Elementary and Choir School Board member, for leading this partnership.

Since January, this new program has connected 88 Harlan students to free after-school care onsite at their school. Programming combines homework help and music. Dr. Tracy C. McNair worked alongside Harlan staff, chiefly Ms. Lavina Jones-Davis and Ms. Tracey Roberts, to implement the program. We are also grateful to volunteers from Delmarva Power who provided care and homework help.

Ms. Brittney Stanton led students in music classes twice a week, and 9 Harlan students joined the Choir School in concert at Sun, Moon, and Stars on April 29.

We look forward to continuing this partnership in the months to come! Next up: free summer camp offerings for Harlan students!

Alum Spotlight: Tim Hurtt '19

Join us in congratulating Tim Hurtt '19 on his graduation from Rowan University!

In an interview with us last summer, Tim said, "When I opened my mouth to sing {at the Choir School} for the first time, my nerves would not allow me to make a sound. About seven years later, I was on my way to Rowan University with a full-tuition scholarship for Vocal Music Education."

Tim, congratulations on your success at Rowan! You have great things ahead and we can't wait to cheer you on!
