May 2023 Edition

A Message from the Mayor

I am pleased to invite you to participate in Vaughan’s first-ever Mayor for a Day contest! Open to Vaughan students from grades five through eight.

The winner of the Mayor for a Day contest will get a behind-the-scenes look at how your municipal government functions! They’ll have the opportunity to attend meetings, tour City Hall, meet City staff, take photos in the Council Chambers and, of course, spend the day with me learning what it’s really like to be Mayor!

So please share this exciting news before May 22. Our city needs the next generation of leaders to come forward with their great ideas.

I look forward to working with you.

RECAP FROM APRIL

I am pleased to congratulate the recipients of this year’s Volunteer Recognition Awards. During National Volunteer Week, the City of Vaughan joins communities across Canada to recognize extraordinary individuals who offer their time, energy and talents to inspire hope for a brighter future. We have a long history of volunteerism in Vaughan. We are grateful for everyone in our city who fosters the tenets of compassion, generosity and goodwill. To all of the well-deserving honourees, thank you for your dedicated efforts to elevate the quality of life and standard of living in our community.

I had a great time joining students from St. Stephen Catholic Elementary School on their walk to school. I had the opportunity to talk to them about the many benefits of adopting active transportation, which is a conversation I’ve had a lot as the father of two daughters. The City is undertaking a pilot program to support active school travel by implementing traffic calming measures such as radar message boards, ladder crosswalks, improved school zone pavement markings and flexi posts. Making kids safer on their way to school and supporting a healthier lifestyle for young people are just a few of this amazing program’s many benefits.
