May 2024 Edition

This Memorial Day, explore Croton-on-Hudson's rich history of remembrance through a newly-created webpage dedicated to the Village's many memorials and monuments. The webpage features an interactive list of all memorials and monuments throughout the Village, including a detailed history of how each came to be.

All residents are invited to join the American Legion Fox Eklof Post 505 for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Corners on Monday, May 27th at 11:00am. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the gym of Holy Name of Mary Church.

After numerous work sessions with the various Village departments and committees, the 2024-2025 Village Budget was adopted on April 24, 2024. The budget remains below the state tax cap while maintaining all vital Village services. The budget also provides some exciting new opportunities, including the funding of a new bilingual police officer position, improvements to Kaplan’s Pond, necessary life-saving equipment for our fire department and an expanded Arts & Humanities concert series. The adopted budget can be found in full on our website; hard copies will be made available at the Croton Free Library and Municipal Building when printed.

On April 10, the Village Board adopted a local law to permit leashed dogs in Gouveia Park. Leashed dogs are now permitted in Black Rock Park, Gouveia Park and the paved walkway at Croton Landing. Please remember to always keep your dog leashed when in a public area for everyone’s safety. Also, if you have not renewed your Black Rock Dog Park permit, now is the perfect time to do so. The renewal form can be completed online.

On April 22, the tentative sale of Parking Lot A on Croton Point Avenue was announced by the Village; subsequently, the term sheet was approved by the Village Board at the April 24 board meeting. Much information on Parking Lot A can be found on the project page of the Village website, including the detailed term sheet, a press release announcing the tentative sale and the RFP document that was published last year seeking offers for the property. The developer will now begin their due diligence process while preparing to submit a special permit application to the Village Board.

Continuing on the topic of the train station parking lot, a major milling and paving operation was completed last week in Sections H and I. This work was scheduled to address persistent ponding areas in the parking lot that would take days to drain following a rain event. A check of the parking lot on Monday, following this weekend’s rain, showed that the work was a success. Finally, the solar canopy project at the train station parking lot continues to make good progress. Additional canopy structures have been erected in Lot G, while panels have been installed atop the canopies in Lot B. More information on this project can be found on the Village website.

Please remember to check the Projects and Initiatives page of the Village website for updates on various other work being done. These pages are updated regularly as more information becomes available. If you have a question or comment regarding anything in this report, please contact me at bhealy@crotononhudson-ny.gov or 914-271-4848.

Sincerely,

Bryan T. Healy

Village Manager

As a friendly reminder, the seasonal gas-powered leaf blower ban in the Village of Croton-on-Hudson will be enforced starting June 1. The ban will remain in effect until August 31. Please note that this regulation does not affect electric and battery-operated leaf blowers.

Unleash the Benefits: Why Licensing Your Dog is More Than Just a Legal Requirement

New York State law requires all dogs over the age of four months to be licensed. Here are some reasons to license your dog (besides, of course, it being the law):

  • Licensing allows you use of the Village's dog park, Black Rock Dog Park.
  • Licensing prevents the spread of rabies: all licensed dogs must show proof of inoculation against rabies.
  • Easy pet identification: simply provide the license tag number to the Police Dept. or Village Clerk's Office and the owner's information is readily available.
  • Help care for/prevent lost animals: A portion of the license fee goes to support local animal control programs.

Visit the Village website to download a dog license application. For more information, please contact the Village office at 271-4781.
