Platte County Federated Women’s Democratic Club (South)
The Platte County Democratic Women’s Club met on Monday May 13th at the KCPD North Patrol meeting room. The guest speaker was Charles Mc Donald, candidate for Platte County Commissioner, District 1. Charles is the only Democrat running for county office so he needs our support. His background is in health care. He decided to run because the current commission does not listen to Platte County residents. He wants to see more citizen involvement and transparency. For example, the Commission does not want to put the ballot initiative for mental health services for children on the August ballot but they have put the new jail proposal that was rejected in 2017 on the ballot without public input.
The club discussed donating to candidates. Because several candidates do not have primary opponents, we decided to make early donations to four local candidates, Jamie Johnson, Andrea Denning, Ashley Aune and Charles McDonald. We also voted to make donations to Maggie Nurrenbern (MO Senate 17) and to candidates for Attorney General , Elad Gross and state Treasurer Mark Osmack.
Sharen Hunt reported on the search for a campaign headquarters. It has been a long and frustrating process but she is confident we will find a good location. The Central Committee has received a grant from AmplifyMO which will be a great help with paying for a headquarters and other expenses. Pam May, candidate for Missouri’s 6th Congressional District will be the guest speaker at the June meeting.
A draft flyer prepared by Alice Wadsworth to promote the Women’s Club was reviewed. Since them Elisa Neilson and Kim Hesler have transformed it into a very attractive three fold flyer that has gone to the printer. It will be ready in time for the June 9th fundraiser, Music and Mimosas and other events in the year ahead. The keynote speaker for Music and Mimosas will be Crystal Quade, candidate for governor. Melissa Hickman and musicians she has recruited will provide music for the event. Tickets are still available on our website platte.dems.org @ $100 or $40 for students.
The club discussed plans for a voter registration drive and announced plans for the Platte County Day of Action to be held on May 25th at Barry Road Park, 8200 N. Congress.
Platte County Democratic Central Committee
The Platte County Democratic Central Committee met on May 15th at the KCMO Police Northland Patrol Community room. The guest speaker was Chris Wright, Platte County Recorder. He spoke about changes that have been made to enhance security for residents; bills introduced statewide and provided a handout on fraud prevention. He also announced a Citizens’ Academy on local government.
Rita McGuire reported on the Platte County Federated Women’s Democratic Club’s (South) meeting. See report above. Melissa Hickman reported that the Women’s Democratic Coalition for Northern Platte is planning an August question and answer event/ town square type gathering instead of a previously planned barbeque fundraiser. They plan to promote it via E-vite.
Chair Meredith Peace provided call sheets from the VAN to reach out to people who might be interested in the Music and Mimosa event. Candidates will have tables for literature and fundraising for an hour before the event begins. They will each be introduced during the event.
Sharen Hunt provided an update on the search for a Democratic Election Headquarters.
