Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In April, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue:
  • Completed noise barrier panel installation between Reston Avenue and Utterback Store Road.
  • Installed permanent signal poles at Reston Parkway and Utterback Store Road.
  • Completed construction of the curb along westbound Route 7 between Reston Parkway and Utterback Store Road.
  • Storm sewer installation and earth-moving activities continued between Reston Avenue and Baron Cameron Avenue.
  • Placed cement-treated aggregate and base asphalt between Amanda Drive and Baron Cameron Avenue.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Colvin Forest Drive:
  • Completed testing of the relocated segment of the Fairfax County Water Authority's 54" water main on the east side of Colvin Forest Drive along eastbound Route 7.  


  • Stage 2 construction pending right-of-way acquisition.


  • Activated the new Colvin Run stream channel.
  • Began excavation for the retaining wall between eastbound Route 7 and the Colvin Run stream channel.  
  • Completed the installation of the concrete footings, arch sections and wingwalls for the south half of the pedestrian tunnel. 


  • Placed cement-treated aggregate and base asphalt, followed by underdrain installation and curb stone placement along westbound Route 7 between Middleton Ridge Road and Trotting Horse Lane.
  • Began grading along westbound Route 7 between Trotting Horse Lane and Forestville Drive.
  • Completed the water main relocation between Beulah Road and Towlston Road.
  • Placed cement-treated aggregate and base asphalt along eastbound Route 7 between Old Ash Grove and Jarrett Valley Drive.

Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

In Case You Missed It
The speed limit on Towlston Road between Route 7 and Bellview Road has been reduced to 25 mph.

Construction activities along Route 7 will be ongoing through the spring and summer months, and additional traffic changes will occur. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.
