Help Us Make Charter Day

a Giant Success

This year's Charter Day Celebration is on Sunday, June 25! Please RSVP via your invitation or online here. If you never got an invitation, please let us know ASAP by emailing us at info@ncjwlongbeach.org.

Our annual Charter Day gives us a chance to come together and raise money to help numerous social service projects in the Greater Long Beach and West Orange County area. It is also our chance to honor many of our long-time activists and supporters and our amazing treasurer Dawn Haldane, as well as see a great program, and enjoy each other!!

We also need volunteers on that day!! Please consider helping us by filling out this form!

Won't you also help make our 77th Charter Day a big success by donating something for our silent auction? We need items such as gift certificates, restaurant cards, artwork, jewelry, dinners for 6 at your house, how-to lessons, event tickets, salon and spa services, and timeshares. If you have something to donate, please leave us a message at (657) 235-2511 or email us at info@ncjwlongbeach.org. Additionally, sponsorship opportunities are available. If interested, please contact our President María E. Osorio at president@ncjwlongbeach.org.

Thank you so very much for your caring and being such a friend of NCJW. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

4th Thursday Movie Night:

Women Talking

Thursday, May 25, 7 pm, at a Member's Home

Come watch a powerful movie together with friends. A fun social night out, together, if you're up for it!! Register below to be sent the member's name and address. The movie will start at 7:15 so please be there by 7 pm. Popcorn will be provided!

Women Talking follows a group of women in an isolated religious colony as they figure out how they might move forward to build a better world for themselves and their children. For years, the colony's men have occasionally drugged and then raped the women. The shocking truth comes out, and the women talk about their new situation: Stay and fight or leave. They will not do nothing. The movie is based on Miriam Toews' 2018 novel of the same name, which was in turn based on a true story of vicious serial rapes in an insular, ultraconservative Mennonite community in Bolivia.

To register, please RSVP to Sharon Brannon, whose phone and email address are in our directory. If you can't find your directory, RSVP by emailing info@ncjwlongbeach.org.

Class Observation and Tour at MOMS OC + Lunch at Zov’s

Wednesday, May 31, Meet at 9 am to Carpool

Join us for a visit to MOMS Orange County, the largest agency providing services to multi-ethnic underserved pregnant and parenting women in OC. MOMS is dedicated to newborn and pregnancy health. Located in Santa Ana, MOMS provides Mommy and Me classes (we’ll observe one!), education on childbirth, breastfeeding, and strong baby development. They are on the front lines of fighting the terrible statistics of high infant and mother mortality in minority women! Our own Sadie Sacks will give us a tour, and then we’ll go to lunch. Check out what volunteer activities you might like to do!

Carpool from Sadie’s at 9 am (address will be shared after registration). Observe a 10 am class for a short while, tour the facility, and then lunch at Zov’s, a Mediterranean restaurant in Tustin.

RSVP by Friday, May 26th to communityservice@ncjwlongbeach.org. There is no fee for this excursion, just pay for your own lunch.

Join Us for HugPack Packing

Thursday, June 8, 6 - 7:30 pm, AJCC Auditorium

Many helping hands are needed, so join us in giving a "hug" to vulnerable children entering the foster care system! We're packing for high school students this time.

Snacks and drinks are provided, and doing good will feel so great!

Vaccinations are strongly recommended. Please RSVP if you want to help: communityservice@ncjwlongbeach.org or call (657) 235-2511.

Lunch with Professor Laurie Levenson

Monday, June 12, noon, Alpert JCC

Join us and Sharon-Carmel Hadassah for lunch with one of our most coveted speakers: Loyola Marymount Professor of Law Laurie Levenson! Laurie often appears on CNN, CNBC, and other news channels to share her informed opinions and cogent observations on current issues. She will charm and educate you at the same time, and we are delighted she will once again join us.

The luncheon event will take place at the Alpert JCC and costs $35. Please RSVP no later than June 6th by sending your check, payable to Hadassah, to Shirley Ross, PO Box 15889, Long Beach, CA 90815. Everyone is welcome, so feel free to invite friends and neighbors!

Get the Lead Out of Long Beach Campaign

Some of us recently attended a "Get the Lead Out of Long Beach" educational program spearheaded by our member Dori Chandler and others. This issue clearly affects the well-being of women, children, and families. It was very enlightening!

If you live in Long Beach and want to help, please send a brief message to your City Council member with the following message (feel free to copy/paste and personalize):

"Dear Council member ________,

I live in district #__ and am concerned about lead contamination in my neighborhood. I am asking that you ban the sale and storage of leaded aviation fuel at the Long Beach Airport. [ADD ONE PERSONALIZED LINE HERE WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT TO YOU.]

Sincerely,

________[Your Name & Address]"

Remember as you write this message:

--There is no safe level of lead (according to the Center for Disease Control).

--Lead is a toxic metal that can damage children's development. It can cause people to feel depressed, irritable, forgetful, and sick.

--Long Beach Airport is rated the second most lead-contaminated airport in the country.

--You can find your City Council members' email or snail mail address here. This is a map to identify your district.

If you want to contact Dori, email us at info@ncjwlongbeach.org and we'll forward your message to her.
