Board visits Turkey Valley

STEM BEST Program

On Friday, May 19, the Northeast (NE) Iowa Regional STEM Advisory Board met at Turkey Valley School in Jackson Junction. Prior to the Board meeting, Steve Pfaffle presented on the schools accomplishments with their recent STEM BEST award.

The Turkey Valley Ag Ed/FFA Department built a greenhouse that supports K-12 students. The greenhouse is a student-run center, teaching sustainability, horticulture, and marketing. Students will be creating a farmer's market where they will be advertising and creating their own market for the products they produce.

Dubuque Area Family STEM Festival Attracts a Crowd.

Engineering design challenges, virtual reality, gravity experiments, herpetology interactions and electricity investigations were just a few of the exciting STEM opportunities families experienced from the 37 exhibitors at the Dubuque Area Family STEM Festival on April 20 at Clarke University in Dubuque. Designed to engage learners of all ages, STEM Festivals offer hands-on, educational activities that highlight local careers and skills. Each exhibit is facilitated by workplace and community partners.

Over 1,100 participants engaged with local businesses, industries and community organizations with hands-on STEM activities that highlighted not only science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but also the career opportunities that exist locally in those fields.
