Please join us for this year's Annual Meeting & Preservation Awards on Sunday, May 19! The event is an opportunity to gather as a community to celebrate the people and projects that bring heritage conservation to life in Santa Monica!

We are excited to convene in the heart of Downtown in the theatre of Illusion Magic Lounge at 1418 4th Street. The theatre is inside the landmark Central Tower Building, an intact art deco ecosystem unto itself, built in 1929 by the owner/architect team Arthur Creel and Eugene Durfee.

During the event, we will honor our 2024 Preservation Award winners whose collective work demonstrates both the vision and willpower to conserve the city's diverse heritage. We will also offer important updates about our vision for the organization, the strategic plan, and by laws; we will hold a vote on five new board members; and we will announce exciting new program initiatives.

Guests are invited to enjoy light refreshments during a reception from 2-3 p.m., followed by the Annual Meeting and Awards Presentation from 3-4:30 p.m.

Conservancy Docents Visit the Hilbert Museum
By Libby Pachares
With the Marion Davies Guest House closed for a month-long floor restoration project, docents thought it would be fun to plan an outing. So on March 26, a group of Conservancy volunteers ventured to Chapman College in Orange to tour the Hilbert Museum of California Art.

The Museum is the new home of the Millard Sheets mosaic mural "Pleasures Along the Beach.” Although Santa Monica sadly lost this remarkable artwork after a hard-fought battle to preserve the Home Saving and Loan Building, the Murano glass mosaic mural has been beautifully restored and is now showcased at the entrance to the newly expanded Hilbert Museum.

Volunteers were treated to a personal tour of the museum by founder Mark Hilbert, who highlighted some of his favorite artwork, including a collection of antique radios, Disney studio art and many pieces by Millard Sheets. Mr. Hilbert explained how he favors artwork that includes people, especially artwork that tells the stories of the diverse people that make up California.

Special thanks goes to Beach House docent Renee Zepezauer for planning this fun and memorable outing! (Docents pose under "Pleasures Along the Beach," image courtesy of Hilda Weiss)
The Santa Monica Conservancy is recruiting neighborhood volunteers to help tell the stories of Ocean Park!

Sign up today and train as a Shotgun House docent, support our seasonal garden tours and evening open house events, and/or learn to host guided walks along Main Street and the Third Street Historic District.

Your involvement is essential to preserving and transmitting the many stories that have shaped the neighborhood! No experience is necessary to join our team of storytellers.
