This year, thanks to your donations to the Moraga Education Foundation, MEF was able to grant $2.55M to the Moraga School District and Campolindo. Your donations make a significant impact at our schools. In this report, we will cover how your contributions to the MEF Giving Campaign create possibilities in the libraries at Moraga public schools.

Elementary School Libraries

Each Moraga Elementary School has its own library and Library Media Assistant. Students visit the library weekly and get introduced to new stories. They learn how to care for books properly and explore all the treasures on the library shelves. They also get the experience of checking out books and are given greater responsibility for them as they get older.

"My child's reading level was higher than her grade level, and I had a hard time finding books that were at her level but were also age-appropriate. The school librarian helped her find stories that challenged her and interested her and that I felt good about."

MEF grants fund the JM librarian and additional books for the library, making it possible for this important space to be available to kids before an after school and during brunch and lunch. Books have been arranged by genre, so it's easier for kids to browse for books they might like.

"The library has a multitude of uses at JM. It is a source of entertainment with its wide variety of novels in multiple genres. It is a vast source of knowledge for informational writing projects or personal interest growth with up-to-date nonfiction sources. It is a meeting place for group work or studying for an upcoming exam. It is a quiet place to unwind with a good book in a comfy chair. Finally, it is a place to go for help with any portion of the writing process including ideas, time, quiet, editing, or printing."

The Library at Campolindo

The Campolindo library is currently undergoing a major transformation. It is being imagined as a true student center like you might find at a college campus, with new furniture and a new layout to better meet the current needs for media and collaboration. Books will be arranged by genre (like in a bookstore), large monitors will be installed for collaboration between students, and furniture will be light and mobile so groups can create privacy pods as needed.

Jenn Frugaletti, the new Campo librarian talks about how she plans to organize and use the new library space:

"Services such as charging stations for laptops and phones will be provided, student organization materials will be available, and I am working on setting up Peer Tutoring and Binder Organization Help that can be accessed all seven periods of the day.

The library will also house the Testing Center. We are purchasing noise-canceling headphones and installing acoustic panels to dampen the noise, and I am looking into either building or buying mobile divider walls to create a private room that can easily be converted back to a common area when no one is testing.

For staff, I will be providing ongoing Canvas (and other teacher software) training and support. Additionally, I will be developing professional development for 9th grade (and all others who are interested) in AVID teaching strategies to embed within their curriculum and to help our 9th graders become confident and strategic learners. (AVID is an organization/program that teaches students HOW to be students - note-taking strategies, study strategies, executive functioning skills, etc.)

I will be working directly with Campo's TOSAs (Teachers On Special Assignment) who will focus on intervention for general education students who need additional support and with ninth graders transitioning from middle to high school. We will look at data to identify who needs intervention and then work with that student on a plan to get caught up or make progress where they are struggling. Looking back at ninth-grade data over the last 6 years led us to develop a 9th-grade program last year to better meet their needs as they transition into high school. Our current data indicates our program has been a success, and it is now being used as a model for other AUHSD schools. The TOSAs and I are working in collaboration to keep improving that program and thus improve the academic standing and feeling of connection for our ninth graders."
