From the Executive Director

Every month in service to JAM's commitments to free speech, civic engagement and transparency in government, the JAM staff record 35-45 local public meetings and community events. For government meetings, JAM provides gavel-to-gavel coverage for a complete record; for community events, we strive to respond to all invitations by community groups to record events, capture the entirety of performances, speeches, etc. and provide a timely edited recording.

On May 1, JAM staff producers recorded the May Day Labor for Liberation Rally on the Dartmouth Green. They arrived in the late afternoon and expected to stay 2-3 hours to capture the main speakers, but as the night's events unfolded, JAM staff judged the presence of cameras to be important for the safety of participants and accountability of the law enforcement mobilization they witnessed. The media were not spared in the arrests that ensued; two reporters for The Dartmouth were included in the roundup. The next morning our staff discussed at length the appropriate way for JAM to present our footage. We decided it is in the public's interest to release our staff's cameras' different viewpoints, including one camera that captured nearly 6 hours. JAM compiled a May Day playlist of recordings from the rally and subsequent events.

Our staff are not trained journalists; rather, we are videographers and documentarians. I have not generally worried for the safety of JAM staff in the field until this event. It has been an eye-opening and concerning experience for us all at JAM, as it has been for our entire community. JAM's mission to build community in the Upper Valley through media arts has never felt more complex or more important.

May Day on campus

On May 1, JAM staff producers covered the Labor for Liberation Rally including speeches, chants and music by Dartmouth College faculty and students, representatives of GOLD-UE union, Jewish Voice for Peace, representatives, Upper Valley for Palestine, NH Faith and Labor, Student Worker Collective, DSA, and others. When Student protesters began to set up an encampment, local and state police arrived and began to arrest participants en masse and confiscate tents.

Free Speech, Hate Speech, Misinformation and You

"... an increasing divide between what people see as a valid expression of free speech, and increasingly just seeing the mechanism of free speech as an avenue for their view of the world." The Center for Media and Democracy's Bobby Lussier moderated this timely and insightful panel with community media national figures Tony Riddle (BRIC Brooklyn) and Jessica Smyser (Cambridge MA) at the Alliance for Community Media Northeast conference in Burlington. JAM is participates in the Vermont Access Network and ACM.

Finding light in darkness

Cindy Pierce shares moving stories of her mother's journey with dementia, blending humor and heartache in "Wrangling the Drift," performed at the Briggs Opera House March 25. As a caregiver, Cindy's anecdotes resonate with those who have experienced similar challenges, offering a reminder of our shared humanity. This performance served as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association, amplifying its impact in raising awareness and support for those affected by dementia, and for JAM – for which we are truly grateful!

NEW season!

Community podcasts

WISEr

Ending gender-based violence

In celebration of WISE's 50th anniversary, we partnered with Northern Stage to create a podcast retrospective. The series features stories of the people who helped evolve WISE into the organization it is today and who continue to create positive change against gender-based violence into the present and future. Our second season picks up where we left off, diving deep into conversation to explore the ways that WISE is inspiring the Upper Valley community to create a more peaceful future. And it asks this key question: how can all of us be a part of the movement? In six episodes, we highlight how relationships can make real and lasting change.
