It's a Breeze
Refugees learn to navigate Atlanta's public transit

In the fellowship hall of the Clarkston International Bible Church, 12 men and women gathered together, speaking different languages from around the world. Although they did not share a language, they did all have one thing in common: each was holding a MARTA Breeze card. With this card in hand, they marched out of the hallway, moving toward the bus stop nearby.

Jonathan's Teaching

A story of illness, loss, and love

Although some lives are cut short by illness, those same lives can be touched by a powerful love. Born with developmental delays and diagnosed early in his life with leukemia, Jonathan* entered foster care with Lutheran Services of Georgia in November 2011, when he was three-years-old. After Jonathan spent a month in the hospital receiving treatment for his leukemia, LSG found a foster home for him with the Bowman family, during which time his cancer went into remission. Norma and Greg were so enamored of him that they wanted to adopt him, and the only thing preventing them was time.

Gloria's Appeal
Board member urges others to support LSG's programs

"I know from my experience that adopting these special needs children is a life-changing event. Seeing our sibling group of three blossom into healthy, happy, well-rounded kids is a small piece of heaven on Earth."

So writes Gloria, member of LSG's Board of Directors and mother of three children adopted through LSG. Recently, Gloria wrote an eloquent appeal in the newsletter of her employer, urging readers to support LSG's Foster Care and Adoption programs, both of which she knows intimately. You can read her letter on our blog.

Shirley Nack: Outstanding Savannah Volunteer

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and recently Shirley Nack, one of our outstanding volunteers in Savannah, was honored by United Way of the Coastal Empire HandsOn Savannah for her commitment to Lutheran Services of Georgia. Shirley was nominated for a Volunteer Recognition Award in the Health and Human Services category, along with 33 other volunteers at nonprofits across the Savannah area. Linda Larson of Lutheran Services of Georgia, who nominated Shirley for the award, Deidre Harrison of LSG and husband Phil Nack joined Shirley at the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon earlier this week.

Clarkston High students in ASAP check out local college

The Clarkston High School students involved in LSG's After-School Academic/Arts Program (ASAP)--most of whom are children of refugee families--stick around after school to work on homework, discuss literature in book clubs, write in journals, or participate in other fun, hands-on activities to increase academic achievement. Sometimes they even get to go on field trips.

On Monday, April 25, these students attended a tour of Georgia Piedmont Technical College...

Adam Hess hosts fundraiser for LSG

On Saturday, April 13, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans teamed up with Savannah Shredding and Lutheran Services of Georgia to offer a free shredding event. Set up in the parking lot outside the local Thrivent office in Savannah, the event provided an opportunity for Thrivent members, friends, and the local community to get rid of old files and make donations to Lutheran Services of Georgia.

LSG thanks Adam Hess of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, as well as Savannah Shredding, for hosting this fundraising event. As a result of their efforts, LSG has received $156 in donations, which we will use to benefit children and families involved with Savannah Foster Care!

Thank you, Epiphany Lutheran Church!

Epiphany Lutheran Church in Conyers made Easter a little brighter for some children in foster care this year by providing them with outfits for Easter Sunday. These gifts brought smiles to the faces of nearly 20 youngsters in foster care, not to mention the foster parents who got to share in their excitement. One beaming foster mother told an LSG case manager that her son Marcus had received several compliments for his outfit on Easter Sunday. Thank you, Epiphany, for these wonderful Easter gifts!
