A Message from Our VP of Academics and Ed Tech

Dear Carondelet Community,

The year is winding down, and the big event to look forward to this week is AP tests. Carondelet participates in the College Board’s Advanced Placement programming (AP for short). The AP gives students the chance to tackle college-level work while they're still in high school. The yearlong classes offered in subjects in all departments (outside of Religion and Kinesiology) are intense and content-heavy. They culminate in externally graded tests that the students sit for and, depending on the score received and the university’s policies, can earn students college credit or placement. AP exam scores are set by the College Board in alignment with college faculty expectations (for the curious, see this article for more information about AP scores and the scoring process). Currently, Carondelet students have 24 AP courses available to them, and next year, we are adding a new AP course to our programming (AP Art History).

If your child has an AP test this week, please make sure they get a good night’s sleep and remind them that the result does not determine their worth. Just taking the class has already exposed them to college-level coursework and has helped them develop and gain academic skills. We are proud of their hard work; this testing is just more experience and yet another opportunity for growth!

Blessings,

Elizabeth Chaponot, Ph. D.

Vice Principal of Academics and Ed Tech

Science Symposium l Wed. May 8

Science Symposium This Wednesday!

Carondelet's Science Department would like to invite you to the Science Symposium, our showcase of award-winning student scientific research, on May 8 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM in the Jean Hofmann Center for Innovation.

Last year, Carondelet introduced the new Scientific Research class that crystallized around the concept of students exploring an area of their scientific interest and learning how science is conducted by digging deeper into researching their chosen subject.

This year, their projects range in subject from altering zeolites for efficient oil/water separation, using waxworms to biodegrade polyethylene, to measuring stress produced from expected versus unexpected urban sounds, and beyond. This Symposium is a celebration of the culmination of their research, so please join us for a night of science, food, and lively discussion!

AP Testing

AP Testing May 6 - 17

Carondelet and De La Salle will be administering AP testing over the course of the next two weeks. Please note the following:

  • Bells between passing periods, PA announcements, and morning prayer over the PA will be suspended during AP weeks. During this time, we will post daily prayers on Schoology and the SLC Instagram account.
  • The Epicurean Cafe will be open each day. Food service will be out of the back of the Garaventa Center on May 9 and 14 as we will be using the Garaventa for testing.
  • The library will have adjusted hours, which can be found here.
  • AP students received an email with detailed information about their exams.

Asian American Pacific Islander Month

Were you aware that May 1 signals the start of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month? During the month of May the nation pays tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have influenced American history and culture.

At Carondelet, our CHS/DLS API Club is open to all students interested in recognizing and celebrating API heritage through fun educational activities and discussions. For the rest of the month, we will be highlighting our API Club and students!

If you want to be featured, email Bettina Bautista,

Graphic Design and Digital Media Manager, directly!

Congrats to our President’s Volunteer Service Award Recipients!

This year, 53 students completed 6,874 hours of service to the community. We are so proud of the commitment you’ve made to serve the dear neighbor! Read the list of recipients here.

In Loving Memory

Sister Margaret Callahan, CSJ

Sister Margaret Callahan, a founding sister of Carondelet High School, passed away peacefully earlier this week at 103. She devoted her life to education and pastoral care, inspiring generations of students with her passion for learning and nurturing souls. Sister Margaret's calm demeanor, profound insight, and unwavering commitment to prayer will be remembered forever. May her legacy of grace and compassion continue to inspire us to spread kindness wherever we go.
