April 20, 2023: District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) Presentation
DELAC is our District’s English Learner Advisory Committee. Our District’s DELAC is made up of parents of students of limited English proficiency Our DELAC committee is supported by Dr. Shoman, our district Family Engagement Coordinator, Elsa Pulido, and our site Family Engagement Coordinators. All sites have been represented this year with the exception of Peninsula and we had both Spanish and Chinese speaking parents. The committee met once a month in person at the District Office.
In its annual report to the Board, the DELAC shared commendations and made recommendations for improvement to the District in the areas of communication; student focused supports including academic and social- emotional supports and family focused supports. Seeking Students to Serve on 2023-2024 Student Board Council
Apply by May 13
The San Mateo Union High School District Student Board Council is seeking members of for a new 17-member board made up of student representatives from each of the District’s high schools - two each from Aragon, Burlingame, Capuchino, Hillsdale, Mills and San Mateo; one each from Peninsula High, Middle College and the Bridge Programs and two at-large members who represent diverse interests of the student body.
From this Council, two Student Board Members will be selected each quarter to attend approximately six school board meetings to represent the Council and entire student body on important issues!
Any SMUHSD student can apply to serve on the Student Board Council. The Deadline to apply for the 2023-24 School Year is Monday, May 13, 2023. Learn more and submit your application by visiting our web page: www.smuhsd.org/student-board.

District to Celebrate the Start of Construction on Gyms at San Mateo and Burlingame High Schools
The District invites members of the public to join us in celebrating the start of construction on new gymnasiums at groundbreaking ceremonies at San Mateo High on May 16 and Burlingame High on May 17. Both ceremonies will be held at 4 p.m.
Construction of the San Mateo High gym includes a new building totaling approximately 20,085 square feet to be constructed on the site of the existing tennis courts.
Construction of the new Burlingame High gym includes a new building totaling approximately 37,492 square feet to be constructed on the site of the existing gym.
Construction on both gyms is scheduled for May 2023 through January 2025. The District wishes to express its gratitude to the voters and taxpayers for their support of Measure L, a $385 million general obligation bond for improvements to facilities across the District.

Central Park Art Exhibit Featuring San Mateo High Students Closes May 6
You are invited to come to the Zoo Animals Art Show sponsored by the Zoetic Tapestry Project. All work featured is by San Mateo High School art and creative writing students.
The last day to see the exhibit is Saturday, May 6 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Kohl Pump House at Central Park in San Mateo.

Gallery to Feature Capuchino and Burlingame Art Students
The Society of West Coast Artists (SWA) Gallery is hosting an Art Show featuring work from Capuchino and Burlingame High School students. The last day to see the exhibit is Thursday, May 4 with visiting times from 12 - 4 p.m. The gallery is located at 527 San Mateo Avenue in San Bruno.

Burlingame Notary Names Erik Bennett Teacher of the Year
The Burlingame Notary recently honored Burlingame High Teacher and Activities Director Erik Bennett with its 2023 Vic Mangini Teacher of the Year Award.

Capuchino's Matt Wilson Named 2022-23 CIF Model Coach Award Recipient
The CIF State office recently announced that Capuchino High's Matt Wilson is a recipient of the 2022-23 Model Coach Award.
The CIF Model Coach Award program is designed to recognize coaches who have served as positive role models in their schools and communities, and who have exhibited the traits apparent in the 16 principles of Pursuing Victory With Honor.
From the press release: "As an athletic director, P.E. teacher, and baseball coach for 22 years at Capuchino High School, Wilson has been a valuable asset and a positive influence for all. He is patient, intelligent, compassionate, and strong-willed with the determination and the skills that make him an excellent coach. Wilson’s strong love for the community is evident through his years of dedication to his craft and the student-athletes that he has impacted."

2023 Citizens Environmental Council Student Film Fest Winners Announced!
Congratulations to 10th Grade Burlingame High Students Shayna Blum and Mayu Simpson, first place winners (High School Division) and the Best in Fest award for their film “Our Energy” at the 6th Annual CEC Student Film Fest, held at the BHS Theater on April 18.
Shayna and Mayu received the award from Kristin Tieche, a professional filmmaker invited to judge the competition. She praised the film's strong narrative, clean, cohesive style and well-composed interviews.
The film festival was a co-production of the Citizens Environmental Council, the BHS Environmental Club and the Social Impact Filmmaking Club at Nueva High School.

Aragon 9th Grader Honored at Sustainability San Mateo County Awards Event
Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC) held its 24th annual Awards Celebration on March 30, 2023. Keeping with the event’s theme - “A hopeful future for our youth” - three high school students were recognized for volunteering their time to make San Mateo County more sustainable.
Aragon High School ninth grader Ethan Hua is one of those three students who was recognized and awarded the U.S. House of Representatives Special Congressional Recognition Certificate for his service to the community. Ethan is being recognized for the program he founded, Help Our Planet Earth (H.O.P.E.) Uniforms Program, which serves the community free of charge by accepting, recycling, and reusing gently used school uniforms, thereby curbing the environmental impact of textile waste.
For more than three years since Ethan founded the H.O.P.E. Uniforms Program, H.O.P.E. has been working as the community partner with six schools in the Sna Mateo-Foster City School District and also the Hoover Community School in the Redwood City School District. Since inception, H.O.P.E. has received over 4,700 donated uniforms, which in turn has provided over 3,600 uniforms to over 550 families in the community. Families can make uniform order requests on the H.O.P.E. website which serves the community in three languages (English, Spanish and Chinese). H.O.P.E. accepted gently used uniform donations in all SMFCSD schools campuses that it serves.
Accompanying Ethan to the award event was Diego Perez, Head of Community Services and Communications with the San Mateo Foster City School District.

CCS Scholar Athlete and PAL Scholar Athletes Announced
Aragon's Lloyd Walter was recently announced as the CCS Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. The CCS Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year were chosen from the pool of 15 student-athletes put forth by their leagues. This award reflects the very best of the CCS: LLoyd is a talented athlete within the Section - he played football and is on the Track and Field team; he has earned numerous individual accolades, including Football League MVP and Defensive Back of the Year. Lloyd is the President/Member of Black Student Union, he has served as a peer tutor and is a part of the Student Equity Council. He is an outstanding student with a high GPA, impressive test scores, and takes a rigorous course load. Congrats Lloyd on this well-deserved honor!

Burlingame High's Natalie Sullivan Wu was also recognized, she was named the Peninsula Athletic League's CCS Scholar-Athlete. Natalie was nominated by her school and put forth to the PAL for selection.

San Mateo and Hillsdale High School Choirs Win Gold
San Mateo Concert Choir along with Hillsdale Concert Choir performed in a combined ensemble and won Gold 3rd in their division at the Heritage Festival in Anaheim.
The Peninsula Chamber Singers, the after school 8th period honors choir, won Gold 2nd in that same division. These two ensembles were directed by Shawn Reifschneider and joined by his Hillsdale String Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra who tied for Gold 2nd in their division.

Burlingame's Carrie Hermann Honored by Junior Achievement NorCal
Burlingame High's College and Career Coordinator Carrie Hermann was selected as a 2023 Junior Achievement of Northern California Educator of the Year! Each year, JA NorCal partners with educators at over 200 schools to help implement their programming.
JA NorCal honored Carrie along with seven other exceptional educators as their 2023 honorees at their Business Hall of Fame event on April 21 at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
Junior Achievement of Northern California has helped inspire and prepare students to succeed in a global economy. Students have participated in Job Shadows, Field Trips, Career Speaker Series, Financial Literacy workshops, and programs focused on connecting their education to future careers, building their skills, workforce, and career readiness.

Mental Health and Wellness
The SMUHSD Mental Health & Wellness Program aims to provide support for students' emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. The Mental Health Therapist and District Social Worker positions involve working with students, teachers, and parents to identify and address mental health concerns and provide appropriate resources and interventions. Candidates should have a strong background in mental health counseling, psychology, and/or social work, as well as experience working with adolescents in a school setting.
